Sharks down south

Went down with a mate to see if the salmon were running yet and decided to do some shark fishing the night before. Ended up with my first wobbey and a port jackson. Never caught anything this big before so was stoked. Both put back to fight another day. Wobbey was estimated at 30kg. No salmon to report of the next day. didnt see one school :(

thats a great wobby mate! Make a nice feed, I havent seen any around for a while though n im wondering what the numbers are like. I think they might be protected over east now or something hey? Good on ya for the release

Something to pull some string

Tue, 2011-03-22 19:17

Something to pull some string at least, maybe its just the pic angle but the wobbie looks 15kg tops, thinking you meant 30lb?

Either way better than nothing at all.

@cuthbad...was up S Bend about 3 months back, after the 12th wobby for the night I packed it in and chucked a hissy! Went back two weeks later and never found a single one? Same spot, same bait n all. Weird fish.

Livebaiting the rocks down Denmark we always pick up at least one, think they're a localised species so not much prob with numbers away from the harder hit area's.

Just south of hamelin bay of the ledges/cliffs near cosy corner.

The wobbey is definately more than 15kgs. Couldnt barely lift the thing of the ground! Perhaps its the angle of the shot that makes it looks smaller.

Will be back down there mid april to try and get some salmon hopefully :)

Wobbies

Wed, 2011-03-23 21:28

If you catch a small wobby chuck it back because the bigger they are the better  they are. Small ones the flesh is hard, chewy and recovery is bugger all . The bigger they get the softer and tastier the flesh gets.

One trick to remember when filleting is to cut through the skin from the inside [make a hole and cut through the skin from underneath] because you will take the edge off the knife in no time.
