if you got the money, look
if you got the money, look at a Daiwa Sealine SLD-30 2 speed, a strong 15kg line rating.
they great all round reels that can take big fish on as well, with the 2 speed it's a godsent for winching up stubborn sharks.
I preffer the metal spool of the Sealine to the Shimano TLD's graphite spool, cause the graphite can explode on you if you punish it too much.
I have both Sealines-30 and TLD 20, each is good for it's role.

um tony
TLDs dont have a graphite spool. my TLDs dont anyway. it depends alot on weather you are shore based or boat and type of shark you are targeting. you dont need anything to special. 600 of 30lb would be adequate for up to medium size sharks out of the boat. If you are going to chase big noahs like big tigers, whalers and makos go 24kg. penn senators, daiwa sealines in star drag, shimano tlds and tiagras and penn inters for lever drags. I would say shore based a big alvey would be the go. still castable yet hold a truckload of line.

you basicly right mate,but
you basicly right mate, but the body and spool seats are graphite and the spool it self is allie I think, ( open to correction)
The Sealine 30 two speed is a lever drag and one of the few 15kg line rates reels that can handle a lot of heavy weight in the sub-$500 area and still be a two-speed.
We had a few TLD's blow-up on us while we fished big tuna off Cape Town back in 2004 and 2005, thats why we switched to the Sealines. We where running 50~80lb mono on those reels and locked up drags most of the time to get in big 50kg+ yellowfins.

i would be interested to know
which model TLDs were blowing up and wether it was the spool expanding or the graphite body giving way. I guess the smaller TLDs arent built to handle heavy mono line. What size were you having dramas with. I guess a more sensible reel with 50 and 80lb mono would be a tiagra or international. just curious thats all!!

mostly TLD 20's and 25's.
mostly TLD 20's and 25's. But then again they where being used to handle 50~80kg yellowfin tuna, which is truely Tiagra turf.
The reel seats would crack and allow the spools to pop out or even snap / deform on some reels. Remember a yellowfin on a run can strip off 200m of line in seconds, blowing the drag washers and generating huge heat and torque in the bodies.
my view is to stay will solid metal game fish reels for big fish,

my heavy 25kg Policansky
my heavy 25kg Policansky 2020 & Sure Catch Pro rod set up getting punished by a Sambo, and ended up the Policansky 2020 being damaged by the brute force on the gear. That has 80lb fireline on it and needed all the screws rebuilt around the frame after that foolish outing by me. So if it was a big shark, say 6foot or so, then the reel would have kaked itself.
If sambos can bust a reel, then big sharks will as well..
