saturday night snapper

went out saturday night for my very first time night fishing and lets say it was a very good start,, its a whole new world out there at night.

left woody at about 3pm, headed out to the FFB, a bit slow to start with and then just as light was fading it went off.

we ended up with 2 snapper,1 duhy they went back as they were just undersize,1 blackarse,1ray shark,2 rays,2 skippy, plus the normal shit fish along with an eel, that had managed to tie himself in a knot around the two hooks and the sinker.

we also saw 2 huge turtles, but the catch of the knight went to my mate with his biggest snapper he has ever caught.

it weighed 9.5kg and measured 85cm and was caught on a unweighted squid floating out the back, just goes to prove there not always on the bottom.

only down fall the night was my gps would not aquire any sats, thank god i keep my hand held in the tackle box as a back up.

plugged the gps in this morning and fired up within 30sec, who knows what happen.

cheers ron

sounds like a great night out. congrats to your mate with a pearler of a pinkie. pity about the gps tho. it happens occasionally but when you dont want it to happen. but as you said , its totally different out there at night. cant see much around you , that can be a bit freeky at times as you just cant see the waves as they are comming in at you

Good job guys. I find that if your floating baits down they get more hits because its more natural looking. Thats how me and my mate get our snapper.

Nice job

I will have to try the floating squid next time too.

Out of interest, how many lines do you have in the water at any one time? I have a mate who tries to fish 3 lines at once, one on the bottom, one floater and one casting. Drives me insane, I am a one liner normally.

tell your mate that only 2

tell your mate that only 2 lines p/fisho is allowed. that will save a few hassles and is the law anyway.

Not really sure that is

Sun, 2010-06-20 15:02

Not really sure that is true. The WA Rules only say this;

Fishing gear
(FRMR Part 4A, Division 2, Regulation 64C, 64E)
Rods, lines and hooks – Recreational anglers may have a
maximum of three hooks or three gangs of hooks per line.
Shore-based anglers may use a maximum of two fishing lines.
Rods and lines must be attended.

It doesn't mention a max for boat-based anglers.

we had 3 onboard and where

Sun, 2010-06-20 17:46

we had 3 onboard and where all fishen the bottom, on occasion we had 2 floaters out but at the time of catch only the 1.

as you say cammos it can get a bit crazy...but thats fishen.

in all my time bottom bouncing i always try to put a floater out and have had some good luck with this, including sharks, sambos and now a snapper.

your right russ, once it got dark it took all night trying to ajust to the motions and it was pretty well flat anyway. made it even harder without my gps firing. (felt naked all night)

there is no way i would go out again if it wasnt the same or better cond. it would be hell if it was rough as guts.

thanks ron

I've gotta aska stupid question

Sun, 2010-06-20 17:54

Does unweighted mean with no sinkers at all or do you still use a ball sinker that is free running?  How deep were you fishing?  We were fishing in around 15-18 meters a couple of weeks ago on the back of the 5 and couldn't keep the Port Jacksons off long enough to catch anything else...may have been the burley we were using.  Cheers, Ben

hi ben mate i used that much

Sun, 2010-06-20 18:08

hi ben

mate i used that much burly wasnt funny, but cause it was all home made for this occasion i was keen to try it out.

no sinker is right mate, nothing at all, just a hook on the end of the line with a squid on it and at times mullie, wrasse or a hunk of fish flesh.

we were on the seward side of the bank in 15-20 mtrs.

i also had a couple of powerfull runs that nite and the first i would of put to a snapper as it had alot of headshaking going on for about 1-2 minutes but lost it close to the boat.

the second prob a ray as it just took of like a steam train in 1 dirrection and then gone.... got my rig back both times so prob not hooked well enough.

try try again

cheers ron

Great result guys

I've been spending a bit of time out that way at night lately. Did you anchor and burley up or were you drifting??

Forgot about the rays...my deckie kept hooking into them but could never get them in the boat after 15 min..  was going to give up on the night fishing but may give it a go again.  Cheers, Ben

good work

Mon, 2010-06-21 12:21

When i go out with my mate we usually anchor burley hard and have a floater out the back each. We then fish another rod each straight under the boat. Find we get the bigger pinks out the back on floaters and usually dhus under the boat! Genearlly have another rod with a soft plastic just in case the sambos come onto the bite!
