Salmon Season 2011 Predictions
Submitted by MattMiller on Sat, 2011-02-05 13:10
Hey guys, that time of year isn't too far away. What predictions are being thrown around regarding Salmon this season. Alot of warm water off the coast this year, what do we think that means?
Has anyone had a fish on the south coast and seen them on the move?
Be interested to hear peoples thoughts.

Yeah mate,
we usually come across the first few schools in the last week of Feb so will be interesting to see what the warm water does.

Yeah will be interesting to
Yeah will be interesting to see what happens. I'm guessing the warmer waters might keep them from being such a presence on the metro shores but then that probably means there'll be a lot of them congregating where ever the colder waters end and the warmer waters start... Cape Nat? Was hoping to get into a few up here this year too!

Never fished for them up
Never fished for them up here either as I'm from Albany/Walpole way myself. I know they school up around Rotto a lot but they can also be found around the beaches/inshore reefs along the metro coast later in the season... if it's a good one?!

salmon
Hey Daneox,
I mainly fish the cockburn sound area and have picked up a few over the years, generally not targeting them though.
The following spots I have caught salmon,
Boat
Southern side of Garden Island
Garden Island Causway
Shore
woodies point, the true point down from the cement factory, walk, walk and more walkin.
also caught salmon trout at the cement factory around april may.
hope this helps

Warm water
Wouldn't be the least bit surprised if they don't even get to Cape Ileuwin with the water temp as high as it is. Would be like the season not long back when the pros didn't get a fish on the west coast and only a small catch from Windy Harbour. The same year there was spaniards caught off Augusta

My prediction for this year
There will be a few more marlin and mackies caught then the cold water will come around up near sharkbay and cut off the warm. The cold water will sneak inside the warm current and push up in close. You will catch more salmon from shore than last year and it could well be the type of year that trolling out at rotto you will catch salmon and mackies in the same day.I dont think it will be a bumper salmon year
But a fair few will make it up.I just hope the warm water holds out long enough for the pelagics.I think that next year may well be the year us gamefishos are waiting for.I hope i am wrong and this season just gets better.I say this is only my prediction and if you dont get salmon its not my fault
So tell me have you got your info from years on the water or hours on the internet?

I am going to revise my prediction
We have a pile of kimberley locusts around our place and all the way down to past hillarys and the water out off Steep point and down toward gero is almost 28 now, so i feel the salmon season is now screwed. The locusts may have been pushed down by the want to be cyclone but last time it happened here the hot water stayed around a lot longer.
So tell me have you got your info from years on the water or hours on the internet?

I mean you will still have the same as normal
More will come from shore metro.Your only bad thing could be if the warm water pushes the cold water wider
So tell me have you got your info from years on the water or hours on the internet?

Yeah mate,
I think that's what happened 2 or 3yrs ago when it was a little quiet on the capes beaches. Still able to find a few small schools but not the solid 20-30 tonnes that we are used to chasing.

That year they all bunched up a long way to sea
one of the pilots that fly down that way said it was insane how many there was in one spot

Travel
All I can say is that if you want to catch salmon this season be prepared to travel to the south coast and Albany Denmark and Bremmer bay would be the spots I'd head for.

-Salmon trout
Try the hospital at Rocky point first thing in the morning for salmon trout using small lures.
Now is about the time trout start their run south and cross paths with the mature fish on their up run.

Heading?
Can nearly bet that they were heading south and were salmon trout. Still too early for mature salmon up run

I have
doubts they were Salmon, more likely mullet or Salmon Trout but would love to be proven wrong.
It's a strange year with high water temps so I guess anything is possible.
