Rookie mistake!
What a Dickhead I was this morning. Headed out from peron to check pots behind the 5 and as i got passed , The Spit? 1st pin, I was thinking the weather is not as bad as yesterday, all good. Travelling nicely at 18knts thought lets step it up a little, 24knts and within 3 m ins temp alarm goes off. Backed straight off, hat off and felt motor, yep she is hot. Let it idle with the hat off getting that blowing easterly over the motor and it cooled pretty quick. Headed straight back to the ramp watching the tell tale, docked and left.
Driving home racking my brain when I suddenly pullled over, run to the back of the motor and theres the problem, Left the MUFFS ON! U Dickhead!
a few people at the ramp seen me and commented the impellors stuffed, lucky i didnt heatsieze it.
7yrs o boating and thats the first time i have done this, hopefully the last.

Cracked up
Mate you are not the first and wont be the last..
Have had the temp problem on a couple of mates boats and each time it was small clear bits of plastic bags. Cant see them in the water and only see them when the leg was raised to check the intakes.
Sometimes when the water is quiet, you can hear the fish laughing at you !

No I haven't
Never left muffs on, but left the bung plugs out a few times and left keys at home (and live in the hills)

Good chance impellor is ok,
Good chance impellor is ok, it will still let a little water thru the fitting.

Haha I did it for a whole trip out once, also collected a heap of weed which didn't help.
Was wondering why it felt a bit sluggish

As long as you learn from it
Ive done it too. Many years ago, but luckily mine didnt get very hot. Quite sheepish back at the ramp when someone pointed it out to me.
Ive also tried launching the boat with the transom tie downs still secured. Wondered why the boat would slide off. Spent 5 mins trying to jiggle the boat, backing in further. Actually got the boat off in the end (god knows how) and then noticed the straps trailing behind the boat in my wake.
Also managed to break a winch post. Inadvertantly had the winch cable running over the roller rather than under it. Created a fulcum and snapped the winch post.
Ive had to warn many boaties down at Hillarys about that one. A particular time I rushed over to a bloke using his winch while his wife was holding the ropes on the jetty. You all know the type...husband yelling at the missus becase its all her fault that the retrieve is going pear shaped, when in fact he's backed the boat too far into the water.
Anyway, I try to tell him that he may wish to put the cable under the roller rather than over. He not-so-politely tells me to mind my own business. I walk away and his wife asks him "what did that guy say to you", to which he replies "nothing important". Long story short...he snaps his winch post. Of course he starts shouting at his missus again.
I did then the best that I knew how. When I knew better, I did better.

Stuff up
Pulled up on the jetty at Two Rocks, tied rope to a post, drove car and trailer down, drove boat up onto trailer, hopped in car and drove off then there was an almighty bang and a shudder through the car.
Rope was still tied to post that was originally on the jetty but was now being dragged up the ramp after me.
Wouldn't have minded so much but the only other person in sight was a good mate who was cacking himself laughing

Haha friday funnies part 2
Some easy and piss funny mistakes made among us.
I actually had a service booked in today and when I told him his reply was"better compression test then", all good, 130psi on all 4 pots.
So I have new impellor and the rest of it.
Bungs is a common occurence for me, normally as soon as it hits the water off the trailer I realise, put it back on, let water drain and a boat pulls in behind me thinking I'm retrieving, then I have to tell him my dumb arse mistake.

Bloody black muffs on black merc....cooked mine...only had boat 3 months .... Nearly $9 k rebuild ....thank god for insurance but motor was virtually brand new after that.....May not be the cheapest company around but I stayed with them due to service I got .
Printed up and laminated a checklist now covering off muffs/ bung / keys/ oil and battery check/ bait / gear/fuel etc to go through before each trip.....can get forgetful in old age or excitement in going fishing sometimes in the rush!
Then there was the time I drove all the way to wagoe towing quad bike......left keys in Perth for it....spent an arvo and half a bottle of jacks cutting up ignition wiring and taping up....worked thankfully.

Ha Ha, I've done it myself
Ha Ha, I've done it myself Adam.
But it's not as bad as pumping 20 litres of fuel into your boat before you realise the nozzle is in a rod holder ! (did that last year)

You Muffin do that too many times
Have taken keys out of boat while on holidays and decided take the cook out for a fish. Have done the beach launch and parked car while the wife held the boat . Hopped in boat to start motor and turned key on and boat not start but the alarm starts to scream that there is a problem .
While trying to figure out problem the sea breeze has got hold of boat pushing it offshore with wife trying to hold it yelling F---ing hurry and start this piece of shit (boat and motor were only 3 months old). I look down and she is neck deep trying to hold boat, redfaced and not a happy boater. I forgot to clip safety switch back on therefore making boat unable to start.
When i realized problem and started boat I had a little chuckle to myself and said i think you better swim around and jump on i have fixed problem.
Took me a good 12 months before i had the balls to tell her that I F---ed up.
I think it has taken the gloss of her wanting to come fishing anymore.

It's good to know there are
It's good to know there are a few other silly people out there besides myself.
Never left the muffs on but have forgotten about the bungs a couple of times .... sometimes when you haven't been out for a while it's just way to exciting when your down at the ramp and about to launch for a day on the water. Not to mention the very early mornings that might have something to do with these simple mistakes being made while we are still half asleep !!
I will blame my stupid stuff up on both excitement and morning sleepy head equally.
Packed up ready to go, fishing gear in, fuel, ice, bait and everything else I could think of .....and off we head to the ramp.
As I was driving down the street I was thinking that the boat felt a bit heavier behind the car than I remembered but not had it long so just thought I was not used to it behind my landcruiser.
Pulled up at a set of lights in Rocko and glanced in the side mirror to see huge plumes of smoke billowing out from the left wheel of the trailer....Shit the brakes are stuck on.
Took off from the lights and jammed the brakes on a few times to try and jolt the trailer brakes to try to free them up and it seemed to work.
Got to Perron ramp, backed into the water and the smoke turned to steam as the water cooled the extremely hot brake rotor down.....Shit I hope that didn't crack it I thought to myself.
Launched the boat and parked the car and trailer up thinking I must get the brakes fixed ...... then the penny dropped like a lead balloon......You stupid f*#%ing idiot....forgot to release the trailer park break before leaving home.
Didn't tell my mates what had happened and just left it with the brakes had stuck on so they are none the wiser....mind you one of them has done the old fuel nozzle into the rod holder trick and pumped 30lts of unleaded into the hull ....... that one still cracks me up !!!
My fishing spots are so secret........... even the fish don't know where they are !!

Muffs!
Managed to get 2 lovely skimpy barmaids to come out for a morning fishing session. Got about 30 metres from the breakwall, gave the throttle some juice and BANG! Muffs went into the prop and stalled the engine. Easy fix, with little damage. Young ladies caught some trout too :)

These are all a great read.
These are all a great read. I've done the muffs once before, wondered why she was running a bit sluggish. Pumping fuel into a rod holder tho, that's a crack up.

I just had my outboard raised
I just had my outboard raised up a bolt and took it for my first spin in the Peel inlet since getting it done. Felt great heading over to Pt Grey and coming back along the same track (I am always weary in the Peel and go out slow and back fast) I pushed her to WOT and started to trim her out and no more propoising when I hit chop.
Great.
Trimmed her up some more and then some more and the outboard starts beaping at me so I pull her off the throttle and the outboard is spluttering so I let her idle for a couple of minutes and start to slowly drive off again and she drove fine again.
Guess I trimmed it out so far that it either cavitated and overheated or not enough water was getting into the inlets and it overheated
Officially off the Pies bandwagon
