resin head skirts or soft head ?

just after a little advise guys .. ive got a number of resin head lures for exmouth but do you guys prefer these or the soft head skirts ? im really trying to catch a marlin and sailfish.

also what sizes do you suggest , i think most of my lures are oscars and smaller (so 10" and less). do you suggest a few bigger lures at all ?? main lines are 50+ lb

depends on the day

I think the general concensus is run soft heads on your flatter days but heavier resin heads on rougher days. I tend to run a bit of both on each day. I would never troll at exxy without a soft grassy in either pink or lumo at shotgun, and I always run something in blue white and pink on a rigger, but the rest are whatever is running well. I found the large soft oscar tends to run really well off a flatline in the corner about 15m behind my boat, and it got smacked by a big blue out near the rigs just after we both said "how well is that thing swimming". But that was on a really nice day.
I tend to run smaller than average lures, so I think you will be fine with under 10", but Maybe pick up a zulu or something similar to run in short on rougher days and as a bigger lure for smooth days. Generally run darker lures closer to the propwash and boat as well for the outline.

thanks guys ... what do you class as wide matt ??

ive no idea when it comes to chasing billies so any info would be great .

unfortunatly the boat we are using up there doesnt have outriggers so i will be limited to a 4 lure spread - 2 rods in the back corners and 2 rods near the centre of the boat.

not the best set up but its all ive got to work with :(

ill have to look for these "rigs" your talking about Simon and then convince the other guys to let me troll out there :)

Inline Bird

Resin heads hard or soft or genuine soft heads I would recommend running a small inline bird at the top of the leader.

as a rough guide, if you head out directly left from yardie creek, the 1389m mark is about 20nm from shore, give or take.

I did pretty well up there

I did pretty well up there trolling without outriggers so you'll have no worries there. I was running 3 rods in my 4.3m boat, my side rod holders are angled out so the tip is around 1-2' wider than the side of the boat, and the 3rd rod is run out of a centre rod holder (this is my shotgun lure). My spread that worked was 2 soft oscars (long corner and shotgun) and a Williamson resin head El Dingo (I think) on the short corner. I used this in all weather and just adjusted my trolling speed to suit the conditions (slower when it was rougher (6-7tks) and quicker in the calm (7-8kts) to get the lures working a bit nicer.
I was told that you needed small soft heads for sails but they loved that Williamson, even though it's 10" long. My marlin lure roll consists of around 8 soft oscars, 6 oscar juniors and 4 Williamson resin heads, with a few other in there that didn't end up getting wet. I ended up rigging all my bigger lures on 250lb with Jobu hooks for 24kg line and Maruto 9/0's for 15kg line.
Initially I thought there were heaps of secrets to marlin fishing but now I think it's more important to just spend time trolling and have confidence in your spread. If you think it looks a little sluggish, speed up, if you're not getting any hits, go deeper, look for nicer water etc. I'd regularly troll for 8-10 hours and do 75nm trolling in a day so just stick at it. It's awesome when that reel screams and the fish jumps, you'll love it. If you need anything else just ask.

For sailfish i like the Richter soft grassy as you can drop it back as it bill whacks which is common for sailfish. The same lure as mentioned is awesome for marlin too and yeh a shogun of this lure will get results. The Richter soft oscar a very good lure for billfish and pink, lumo, black nice colours to wet!

I like resin heads also, good in choppy conditions as mentioned. My Richter Oscar Junior is a killer lure that gets results for me, sailfish/marlin/YFT etc etc. My fav colours are lumo, black & purple with these ones and the smaller the better for getting bites. If ya want a big billy/Blue etc then yes wider and bigger lures like Richter soft oscar/splash/big-eye etc the go!

We stock all Clint & pre-rigged properly so all ready to go =)
