Rescue of mindarie last weekend - vessel damage
Submitted by Iceman on Tue, 2011-07-12 10:00
Was in Hillarys this morning and had a look at the damage. vessel was a Markham Dominator about 5 years old. Spoke to the crew who went out to rescue them and they said it was very rough conditions. Took 7 hours to tow the vessel back to Hillarys up side down. Looks like a write off.

Have there been any reports of what happened?
As the owner of a Markham Dominator myself I guess you could say I'm more than interested. The only positive I see is that it remained floating whilst upside down, something I'd prefer not to test myself.

Cheap wouldn't be my choice of words
but each to their own. When I purchased mine four years ago the Kevlacats, Noosacats and Markhams were all similarly priced with the Leisurecats a bit dearer. The Markham had the larger deck area of the 4 and that's what won me.

Wouldn't really say thats a fair coment. I've seen more Kevlas sink than Doms. Don't like cats but i'd go the Dom anyday.
I'm also keen to find out any answers, it seems to me lately there've been a few boats all going down..

Dominator split
Rod P,
It is a credit to the crew and the rescue mobs that these guys made it home safe and sound - no doubt a little shaken.
As a catamaran fan, long time listener - first time post'r.
I would be interested to know of how many and what kevlas you know have "gone down".
Cheers

2x Cats
Been two cats sunk up our way in the last 6 months, not sure what make or models but bloody glad we went for a Naiad for sea rescue instead of an Air rider or cat.

Over the twenty years plus
Over the twenty years plus for me in the game i would have lost count of the total numbers. For all sorts of reasons and all brands. I was even once asked to formally comment on a death as a result of a cat sinking for the state coroner so i think i have some experience in the mater.
My point is all boats will sink one way or another and my comment was in regard to the above statement pointing to a individual brand being better than another.

Looking at the pics it
Looking at the pics it appears to be fatigue cracking along the most stressed part of cats hull. However, the design of these hulls should take this into account which would prevent this from occurring. I believe Markham need to investigate this hull to determine exactly what has occurred so as they can discount design flaws.

Design flaws it really could
Design flaws it really could be anything. I'd keep an open mind.
Could even have been previous damage from maybe loading on trailer too fast and hard. Just don't know yet..

I have been out in a dominator in what one could only describe as horrific conditions and would trust it again if I had to. Who knows what caused that failure???

Hitting something,
Maybe hit something previously, started a small crack?
Seems like excessive damage from just ocean travel.

Would have no trouble in trusting a Dominator in good nick to get my left nut home safely (Mate has one). Curious about the damage as it appears a few layers have come off?? Impact or water damage perhaps??

The boat
I am the owner of this boat, sorry I didn't reply to all of you because I didn't know about this website until yesterday.
Now on the day that it happened the wind was less then 10 knots the swell was less then half a metre, in all it was a good day out. The boat itself just de-laminated, like all boat owners I hand washed and babyed this boat. Never seen any stress cracks or other damage anywhere on this boat, only took minuets to sink. Markham himself inspected the boat and refused to accept any liability at all. Could say a lot more about mark, he has never offered any help so I could get another boat. Insurance company did lots of stress tests and came to the conclusion that the boat NEVER hit anything and it was a manufacturing problem.
in conclusion lost half the value of the boat. I would like to say to the men who rescued myself and friends, a big thank you very much and the weather did change late in the day when the boat was towed back. I have never heard from Markham since, and I would like to. Thank you all, for your concerns. Hope I answered all your questions
thank you
-Terry

Thanks for jumping on here
Thanks for jumping on here and updating, many of us have an interest in this sort of issue.
To be honest Im not suprised the insurance company "found nothing", a bit like the Tobacco Institute being unable to find any link to cancer.
The insurance company should have at least been challenged on their "findings", if they werent.

Confused,
Where did he say they “found nothing”?
The guy said they did testing and found no evidence of an impact and concluded that it was a manufacturing fault.

what’s confusing?
The insurance company found nothing to indicate an impact, hardly an unbiased party.
Considering that if they had, they would have had to pay out $100k+

Think its already done and
Think its already done and dusted 5 yrs ago.
And to be honest it looks more like manufacturing than anything else but my point was that the Insurance company will always find in their own favour in the absence of any resistance.

Scary stuff anx glad you
Scary stuff anx glad you were all safe. We had a Dom 2004 model, i recall a day we went out and the forecasters got it wrong, caught up in 4 meter swels and easterly winds 20 plus knts heading back in lots a big bangs but no problems. I guess it is like anythi g with the odd model having faults be it a boat or car.

Forecasters got it
Forecasters got it worng??
Did you leave in the dark?
Did you not think hmmm there seems to be a lot of swell around....
Did you not check the live readings ( seabreeze ) ?
Did you not check the live bouys ( naturalist then the bouys further north assuming you are fishing out of Perth )
Its easy nowadays to blame someone else rather than cop it on the chin and think we aint as smart as we thought we were but we got lucky!!
Terry - Glad you are ok bud, thats all that really matters...
Unfortunately out of pocket a shit load but things could have been a lot worse...
Surely if this boat was built in the same way that every other boat that comes out of that factory has been there has to be a call up like they do with faults on cars?!?!
If i was a Markham Whaler owner i'd be wanting my hull extensively tested, you buy these large ocean going vessels for comfort and safety while fishing wide, you dont want peole loosing lives because of faulty worksmanship if that is the case above....

No regulation
Unfoftunately the boat building industry is not regulated so it’s mostly a case of you pays your and you takes your chances.

I can’t profess to being a great cat fan.
But generally speaking any modern well constructed vessel should be able to handle well in excess of what the people on board should comfortably cope with at least in terms of structural failure.
Many years ago i skippered a Cougar Cat charter boat up north, that developed tunnel cracking probably quite similar to the pics here, at only 2 yrs or so old.
I’d have thought the construction techniques and scantlings would be much better understood in the 20 yrs since though.

I ever an industry needs to be looked at by a royal commission
If there ever is an industry that needs to be placed under the gaze of a royal commission it's the insurance industry/
Just like the banking industry, these businesses have got away with bloody bare faced robbery over an extended period of time.
If they are challenged they roll out the corporate lawyers and will defend the indefensible until the fat lady sings, then if it is appearing that they may loose at the eleventh hour they will roll out a confidential settlement and the matter will be buried in legal cover up.
I kid you not.

Not my experience
I’m sure there are some bad practices around but my experience with insurance claims has only ever been positive.
Never had a claim rejected, and even had some sizeable claims that were marginal fall in my favour after some calm and rational debate. I’ve also never made a ludicrous claim that clearly was outside the policy.
Unfortunately the bad practices are on both sides. Aside from genuine fraud, some people don’t understand their policies and coverage, and get stroppy when their claims are rejected.

I had Club Marine reject part
I had Club Marine reject part of my claim which was my GoPro that ended up in the drink with a couple of rods. They said I had to get a written quote for a new one and provide proof of it so I spent 90 mins driving out to JB HIFI for the quote and then a further 90 minutes editing and then uploading a couple of videos to YouTube for them to view and they then turned around and told me they won't cover a GoPro.
Wankers made me do all that work for nothing and I took it on the chin at first but have decided that I'm going to pursue it further out of principle.

Dropped them
Ditched Club Marine years ago Jack - bloody useless!!
Dodging, ducking and diving responsibility at every opportunity.
paid for a few repairs myself, that were legitimate claims, simply because it was too hard to deal with them
Unfortunately, it's true, you only ever know how good an insurance company is when you make a claim
Am currently with SGIO but have not tested them with a claim
