recommendations/oppinions asked on different overhead reels for deep Saltwater deep bottom fishing with braid lines.

Had the opportunity to have a fish with a nice Daiwa braid loaded lever action overhead reel.

I was "warned" by the owner that I would want one, and,.. he is correct.

Likesd it very much.

Cannot remember the type of Daiwa reel, but something similar or the same is high on the list

Looked this morning at the Shimano Tyrnos 30 and liked it.

Did not find a shop with Daiwa reels (recommendations where to go?)

And open to other lever action overhead reels.

Appreciate the help.

I think the rifles are lever

I think the rifles are lever action, the reels are just lever drag ;)

I used to have a daiwa saltist lever drag, but I replaced it with the Shimano Talica TAC8 and like it a lot more.

The Jigging Master PE8 reel is ideal for bottom fishing & deepwater work with capacity : PE8-500m and efficient drag 45lbs & Max 80lbs.

The other would be a Penn 16VSX (2 speed if you want to go that way) and you can load up 600m of braid with a powerful double disc drag system. As for braid, look at the 80lb Berkley Whiplash braid which is thin & very strong.

Smaller Shimano

Sat, 2011-03-05 16:07

Try a smaller Shimano lever drag overhead reel in the Charter specials, not as big and bulky as the others and has line leveller fitted.

Accurate 665HXM - Can't fault one. Spooled with over 700m of top end 50lb braid (not even full) and the same size as a torsa 20

how about you state the obvious and tell us what depth of water you class as "deep" ???

till is onto a great reel for waters under 120m  ... with the talica 8  - it more suited for 50m tho

oceanside is on the money for deeper waters with the 16vsx

but you need to provide more info if you expect the advice to be accurate mate

Depth and type of

Depth and type of fishing!

I've used the TAC8 as deep as 220m, but thats really pushing it.

For Deep Jigging (say 200-350m) I'm using an Accurate Boss BX600 with 600m of PE6/80lb on it, and a BX600N with probably 600m of PE5/70lb, but I did lose count on that one ;)

The 16VSX is a beast, but not really a jigger. Certainly if you were going deep, and using baits, then harness lugs would be a big plus.

I'm not the biggest fan of levelwinds on overheads. Certainly the charter special fills a niche, (ie; charters) and you need them on baitcasters, but once you know how to thumb the line in, they become redundant.

You are correct, forgive me

You are correct, forgive me being a complete novice.

Fished in about 50 metrs of water.

100mtrs , would that be to deep?

What sort of reel does one need for that?!

Tyronos 30 is a great reel

Sat, 2011-03-05 21:33

Tyronos 30 is a great reel but a bit big and bulky in my opinion. Good for 30 lb trolling but thats about it. Id go for either the daiwa saltist 20 or 30 lever drag or a small talica depending on ur budget for hat sort of work.

Avet

Sat, 2011-03-05 22:12

Avet is another very reputable brand to look at. For the depth you are fishing in, you dont need a reel as big as the Tyrnos 30. Check out Avet's JX reel. Holds plenty of braid. Its lightweight, yet its built from high grade Billet Ally. 6 bearings and a powerful drag system.

The other question is how much are you planing to spend??

I am seeing this 2 speed

Sat, 2011-03-05 22:44

I am seeing this 2 speed variety and have a question regarding this.

Why would you want to drag in a fish on a slower speed?

As a complete fishing newby, I am asking, politely, what this function is about.

**(( I have a Penn 4.0 senator with a 24kg rod.

spooled with heavy mono.

I have a Penn boat rod (18KG) with 2 Penn Seaboy 190 over head reels, one now with braid line and one with mono ( for trolling))**

Would like a Bottom bouncing fish outfit as described in first post.

The information has so far been great, learning lots, thank you!

A lower gear ratio = more

Sat, 2011-03-05 23:04

A lower gear ratio = more torque, a big help when trying to turn a heavy stubborn fish in deep water. A high ratio = more line wound in per turn of the handle, a big plus when you retrieve your rig from deep water to re-bait or to keep up with a fish that changes direction.

If you are only fishing

Sat, 2011-03-05 23:33

If you are only fishing 50-100m then get the Talica TAC8, it's a great reel.

 twin speed reels are good

Sat, 2011-03-05 23:47

twin speed reels are good for super sized fish .. like huge sharks and stuff like that .. in saying that ive got a few 2 speed reels and ive never used that function.

for the depth of water your in id be looking at a talica 8 or something similar .. very light and bloody strong .. heaps of line if you head out that little deeper too .. i used mine in 120m last week and it was fine
