Radar for Lowrance HDS8 gen 2
Submitted by deforce on Thu, 2017-05-25 16:16
I am looking to get a radar for my boat, have a Lowrance HDS8 gen 2 with radar overlay options.
Question is has someone got this setup and what are your thoughts, good, bad and the ugly.
OR should I dump this unit as there are perhaps great options out there with better technology??
How do they work and are they benificial?

Radar is next to useless on
Radar is next to useless on a small boat, why do you want it?
Most people I know with it, rarely use it except maybe to ping boats on a calm day!
Amongst the reasons is that with the scanner so low, your horizon is maybe only about 8 miles away and a ship is easily visible at that distance day or night
The rapid roll of a small boat introduces more clutter than you get on a larger vessel.
Give a man a mask, and he'll show you his true face...
The older you get the more you realize that no one has a f++king clue what they're doing.
Everyone's just winging it.

I'd keep the HDS as a stand
I'd keep the HDS as a stand alone GPS and get a Furuno sounder and 1kw tranny

To be fair it's probably the same bloke sitting on your favourite spot that you pinged with the radar in the first place.

I did alright today. Forgot my bait so I just used an empty hook and caught myself a manmaid.
Yeah that Markfish is an amazing bit of kit, just gotta remember to delete your Furuno waypoints regularly or you get stuck doing it while you're over some juicy ground.

Must be a lot of flogs in the commercial industry... People who fish at night a lot might find a great benefit to radar as well.

Can't say I've used radar a lot rec fishing but there was one particular day that stood out off hedland. Was a fog so thick that you couldn't see 20m. Went out via radar overlaid on plotter through the channel and headed offshore. Fishing a patch and another boat came to the same area. Was only 100m away at times and watched them pull up and reset drifts a few times over a couple of hours. Bet they didn't even know we were there. Most boats didn't go out that day. Fog stayed thick till mid afternoon.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?
