Pemberton trout

 Hi all

I'm heading down to Pemberton with my 14yo son for a few days next week. This is an annual trip to spend some quality time together and do some fishing.

I've discovered some good spots over the years but those are mostly on the Lefroy and a couple of others. What I'm hoping for is some guidance on locations that give reasonable access to the Warren, Donnelly and Treen Brook. It's hard to keep a teenager's interest at times when you're just srambling through one after another area choked with blackberries!

I'm not looking for any secret spots of course but just locations where access is easier than others. I can hopefully find the fish once we can get to the water!

Appreciate any help that you can give.

Cheers

Dave

 Hey Dave

Been a couple of years since I've been down that way, however, a couple of places that you could try would be:

1) Moons Crossing - you should be able to see that on most maps.

2) Follow Burma Rd out of town until you get to the Warren River bridge. Take any of the logging tracks to the side and most of them will take you down to the water.

3) Head out of town down towards Northcliffe & take the left hand turn towards the Cascades. Follow that road until you get to the bridge that crosses the Lefroy. From there it's only a few hundred (blackberry-free) metres to the confluence of the Lefroy with the Warren.

No idxea what the water levels are like down there at the moment, but those spots have always been kind to me! Remember, the further and harder you walk, the better the fishing will generally be!

Cheers

 Thanks Nick.

I've fished where the Lefroy meets the Warren before with some success so will give that a go. I'll also try the others too. Moon's Crossing looks like a good option too.

I think water levels are way up so it'll be hard fishing. I've struggled in those conditions to find fish but we'll manage! And yes I know the more you walk the better the fishing!

Really appreciate the advice.

cheers

Dave

Depending on the water level, you might also want to try on the Donnelly upstream of the Vasse Hwy bridge, or anywhere on the Donnelly between there and One Tree Bridge. Some cracking spots in there, and I've often found that the water levels in the Donnelly are fishable when the Warren isn't. Make sure you chuck up a post and let us know how you went!

Well we caught a few

Fri, 2016-10-14 14:39

Well there was plenty of water in all of the waterways - and that's an understatement! Some local say they haven't seen it like this for 25 or 30 years! Certainly the most I've ever seen, particularly in the Lefroy. At the bridge next to the hatchery it was a deep raging torrent at a time of year I've been able to almost jump across there!

The Warren was pretty much unfishable because of the water volumes. Where we did fish we found it almost black an very un-fishy looking. Didn't get a touch despite lots of different lures and techniques. The Donnelly was much the same although not as much water and better clarity.

Got some nice rainbows in the Lefroy in various spots. Got 4 rippers to around 40cm plus. Photographed and released. Must be ex-brood stock but they were in great condition and their tales weren't worn at all. Saw a lot of fish and caught quite a few. Enough to make us both happy campers! Saw and caught a few, mainly yearlings, in the Lefroy below the Cascades. Quite a lot of fish around and good water clarity there too.

Acess to a lot of spots was impossible because of the amount of rain down there, including when we were there. That prevented me trying some of the spots I'd identified. Next time.

Caught rainbows only and only saw one reddie. Not sure if it was us, the locations or the fish but no redfin caught by anyone I talked to.

Many thanKs to Nick David, Choc and Little Johhny for passing on some much appreciated advice and locations. It certainly helped us and meant more time for me and the boy fishing and less time hunting around, although we still hoofed it plenty!

Cheers

Glad to here that you had a bit of success - I must try to get down there myself sometime before Summer dries it all out too much

Did you manage to try out any of those spots that I mentioned?
