pan sized mako.....

had not a bad day out yesterday....

me and a mate braved the early north slop with a mate, and hit the 40's, and ended up releasing 10 dhus, all around the 5 - 6kg mark, keeping 2 for a feed.

around 10:30 this little bugger came and made an appearance around the sea anchor, and lucky for me (but unlucky for him...), i had a gang on a trace in the rig bag, ready to rumble, and had a whole herring floating down to his feeding level in less than 30 seconds.

by all accounts, the fight was pretty embarrasing for the mako, and he was subdued on 15kg in about 4 mins, without so much as a decent run, let alone the ariel acrobatics makos are renowned for. the only time he showed a bit of how-ya-goin, was when we decided that he was coming home with us, and dispatched him with the bat. he measured around 1.4m long, and approx 50-60kgs.

we removed the fins and head, and trunked him into the esky. the noticeable thing was the lack of stench of ammonia in the shark (literally no smell at all), and i can now see why they are regarded as such high-quality table fare. we had some last night for dinner in egg and breadcrumbs, and it was absolutely superb. i reckon you would be hard-pushed to tell the difference between that, and most other pelagics like macky, swordfish, etc, and i wont be hesitating to get another one onboard when/if the opportunity arises!!

ps, sorry about the blood. if i had've known it was that bloody, i would have given him a wash.

That is the classic size to absolutely go burco. Surprised a little by the ease of capture. Normally would try and pull a Stickface backward in a weight for weight fight, complete with Jumps etc. Was it skinny in the gut section? Perhaps a little starved and fatigued.

Great looking fish.

Yeah

Yeah German, we did sink the gaff. But it hardly flinched when we did. The only thing that got some reaction was a tap on the head with a bat.

Colt striker I did keep the jaws. I even spent an extra 15 mins cleaning them up, but I heard boiling them removes any excess tissue from the bone, but after only about 5 mins on the boil, they completely fell apart (into 4 peices....), and all the teeth fell out. Farkin spewin.

Crasny it was in great condition, and was darting through the water pretty quickly whilst it was free swimming, but as soon as it was hooked, it just gave up. I don't actually think it realized it was hooked until it was too late.

Paul we'll definitely say gday next time. We were goin to yesterday, but by the time we were fixed, re-Lisa was already out the harbor.

Shark jaw preparation

Mon, 2011-08-08 17:15

The attached link has a good tutorial of how to prepare shark jaws.  As many find out the first time (me included) boiling is not the answer.

Nice fish!

Just a bummer you didn't get the full-on fight they're known for...we used to get them regularly off Mexico/California and I only wish some of them had come in as quietly as yours did!

Lack of ammonia stands to reason as they have a very different physiology to that of other sharks...they are warm-blooded, like tuna, and the other members of their family (great white/porbeagle/salmon shark) are the same. From memory we BBQ'd ours, and was sensational, but sashimi would also go down a treat.

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.
