Otoshi's Mulloway
Submitted by Colin Hay on Fri, 2009-01-30 13:44
After some considerable hard work and perserverance Otoshi picked up this great Mulloway near the Narrows the other day.
Well done Otoshi

Well Done
Strange...! I have never caught a Mulloway from shore and would love to do so! I went out on a Charter quite some years ago with 'Sharkari' when they 1st started operating and we hit a school of Mulloway in open water behind Garden Island and all at once everyone on board hooked up. Was mayhem but congrads to the skipper at the time, he made sure we only took 1 each and released the rest. We then quickly left the spot only to be put onto snapper somewhere else and also leave them biting to move on. I'm not trying to pug 'Sharkari' (was a long long time ago) but at the time I was impressed.
This year I plan to do some all night seasons anchoring in close to some well known Mulloway haunts off Bunbury and drifting live baits.

Thank you all for the
Thank you all for the encouragement but i honestly cannot take all the credit. as there were two young boys who taught me how to get them and they are James and OT, the two winners for the junior fishing comp. they were kind enough to teach me to set up and rig and even how to hook the bait right to keep it alife longer.
callum: it went to close 16kg
James and OT: thanks for showing me all the how to and not to.
Mr Colin Hay: thanks again for getting the foto brighter and yes, 1st and hoping it will not be my last.
I'll be chasing flat head, salmon and KGs. Chasing flat head and salmon with lures but not sure about KGs. any advice on rigs, tide, location, bait would be most welcome. Thanks in advance.

For flatheads, the area near the traffic bridge in Freo in pretyy reliable. A long shanked hook, a smallish beabn sinker and a prawn will do the job. Of if you can get hold of a Prawn Star they work well
The salmon will be moving around down south by the end of Feb hopefully and up in Perth a month or so later. A surf paternoster with ganded hooks and a mulie is the favoured bait setup, or lures are good too.
Whiting, a similar rig setup to that for the flathead in the same area would work.

Now that you have broken the seal you will probably find you won't have to wait as long before you get the next big one,or it seems like it!!!
