Other hobbies

I know we all dream and pray for fine fishing weather! Haha
But would be interesting to hear of what other hobbies people enjoy besides doing up rigs and oiling their reels!
As for me, I love a bit of gardening and trying to build up a tropical fruit tree collection. So far I have Longan, Wax Jambu, Grapefruit, Guava and looking for other exotic fruit trees.

I like growing food
I have about 1.5 acres under cultivation, about 70 fruit trees, mostly Mediteranean/ sub tropical. I find it most satisfying giving all my excess away to those that may not be able to afford it.

Good cause
That is a great cause! I work at a supermarket on most weekends and I see alot of food being thrown away (past due etc) and yet, the food is still edible. I'm not allowed to give them away to needy families due to regulations....

It is a problem..
It's 2017 and we are going sort of backwards with our approach to food production/distribution IMO.

Tried barra one season
I built an aquaponics setup also but had the garden component mounted vertically up a wall with a series of cascading pots leading to barra in the tank below. The sudden early cold snap we had a few years ago knocked them off before they were a decent eating size. Going for Silver Perch or trout this year.
What little time is left after two kids under 7 is spent playing guitar in a covers band.

Trout are awesome aye. They just smash the pellets and any bugs you chuck in.
Barra need around 26 degrees to grow well and we only have a short part of the year in Perth that the pond temps stay around there due to cold mornings and nights. My pond is next to a high retaining wall and with my setup this year I was going to install a second pump through back poly on the wall controlled by an external thermostat to cut out if it gets too high so that it pumps water through the pipes during the day and then shuts off at night and have a pool blanket cover to trap the heat at night. By the time it got to the end of November I knew it just wouldn't be worth it with the mild weather.

Gardening and golf outside of fishing
let me tell ya now, I'm definitely a better Gardner than I am a golfer! Hahah
love my fruit trees, growing veggies, and a nice flat green lawn which I mow each week. With 2 black labrador's (the youngest is only 1 year old) they help to airate the garden beds each day! So always having the soil turned over for me. Lucky their purebred show dogs or they might have found a home elsewhere by now. Hahaha.
Also still got a soft spot for old school 4's and rotaries, but with 2 young kids, it's family car 4wd's these days instead of intercooler and boosted rice burners.

Suppose they all go hand in hand but I love camping and 4x4ing. My ute is always set up and ready to go at a moments notice. Love hitting the beach more so than technical rock driving and slopping through mud! Adrenaline is always high when you're facing a large dune and you know it's gonna take your best to get up it !

Geez Mark, you have a small farm going at your place! Chooks, yabbies etc. I'll look for a couple of goats to add to your collection! Haha
I have 5 chooks and planning to get rid of them and use the space for an aviary.

Growing herbs and veg
I decided a couple of years back i was sick of bland tasting herbs from the supermarket so decided i would start growing my own.
I built a small greenhouse to fit in the corner of the backyard so i can grow most things year round. Nothing beats the taste of freshly picked parsely, corriander and heirloom tomatoes. I started this when i was still at uni so it took a bit of convinving for my old man to believe i was actually growing tomamtoes in the greenhouse.
Also a fan of competative gaming (PS4) when the weather is really crap.

Great bit of kit - first time we have managed to grow the herbs and veges withought killing them - super impressed. As for me I'm trying to get some wood working gear together to get back into that. I'm also keen on aviculture - also looking at how I can get back into that a bit more - bred many asiatic parrots and other birds for a long while, albeit a long time ago.

Hey gyproc 101
yeah ended up scoring a 1 owner since new, Kakadu turbo diesel 100 series. Leather throughout, fridge arm rest etc.
176,000klms and all Toyota factory options like rear dust deflector, headlight protectors, window shields etc. 5 speed auto and drives like a dream. I looked around from Mandurah, to two rocks, to toodyay and there was plenty of mixed results. After months of looking I found "the one" advertised all of 5 mins drive from my house. Was on gumtree for 1 hrs and I paid the exact advertised price it was that good. Full service history etc. will do me for a few years for sure!
now just gotta save some coin and get a tinnie again. Something simple and tiller steer will do me for a while.
Cheers

I like to read....read, read, read and more reading. History is my interest (mostly ancient and Medieval)...and whenever Matthew Rielly has a new book out. Riding my bike around Lake Joondalup as fast as possible while dodging tiger snakes and dugites. Trying to wear my dog out at the local park though I fail more often than not. No idea where he gets his relentless energy from! The prime reason why I can never have a decent back lawn.

just spent 1hr in the back of an ambulance from a bee sting to the side of my nose, I dialled up 000 for precautionary measures about my neck swelling up and choking me, Epi pen to the leg, starting to feel ok now. Been playing the guitar on and off for 18 years, by no means a virtuoso, just like to jam along to songs for my own enjoyment. Camping and 4x4ing. The last 12 months I've become rather addicted to camp oven cooking, whether it be at a campsite or just at home. I enjoy reading as well. Quite a few other little hobbies as living in Leinster, you just need something to take your mind off the monotony of the place. Aquariums
Started with a couple of goldfish in a small aquarium. Did some reading and learning and they now live in a pond.
I now have a few aquariums with a 6 footer on the patio for keeping West Australian native fish and shrimp, a semi aggresive tank in the dinning room, a tetra tank in the living room and a small tank with ornamental shrimp. None of which can be eaten but very cool to watch and relaxing when sipping a beer. All have live plants in them so there is a bit of work involved in gardening them.
Sometimes when the water is quiet, you can hear the fish laughing at you !

Maintain a fair garden of a variety of plants, trying to graft different colour desert roses into others at the moment.
Also enjoy heading bush and finding a new track that goes somewhere, plenty of good stuff around with the rain we've had in Karratha lately. Lots of rivers flowing and warm mini waterfalls to mooch around and drink beers in.

yea nobody can guarantee a colour from seed regardless of what colour plant they come off, my girlfriend has an amazing ruby red one I bought her and it has massive leaves and flowers, gonna wait till that seeds and grow some to see what colour they end up but prob just pink, how long do the ones you grow from seed take to flower, mine have taken 3-4 years !

For me it's tinkering with my cars, camping, a bit of prospecting and anything RC really.
Currently I have an Rc car and boat I sometimes play with but my real favourite is my RC Helicopter
At the moment I am in the process of removing it's nitro engine and installing a two stroke petrol engine.
I started flying the real ones and headed for my commercial licence but quickly ran out of money and my situation changed so couldn't really see a future in pursuing that avenue so the next best thing was the remote control ones which feed my hunger nicely and ALMOST doesn't cost as much !!
My fishing spots are so secret........... even the fish don't know where they are !!

Bit of a late bloomer on
Bit of a late bloomer on this thread but had to chime in on the growing food hobby.
Love growing fruit and veg to feed the family and we are currently building on an acre property in a Bedfordale where I will be setting up a decent patch (everything is in grow bags and pots at the moment). Finger limes are my latest interest but my real passion lies with garlic. I have the biggest collection of garlic cultivars in WA (would love to be proven wrong) with over 50 different cultivars going in this year :)
Gardening goes so well with fishing as you can't beat some fresh salad with fresh fish. And also a great use for those fish frames in the garden too ;)
