Octopussy jigging for Demersals
Submitted by saltatrix on Sun, 2008-06-29 00:19
There appears to be a rapid explosion in the range of sinker based jigs with rubber strips skirts being released by different companies.
Daiwa Bay Rubber
River 2 Sea Octa Sniper
Shimano Lucanus Jigs
Have I missed some?
Has anyone had any success inshore Metro with these jigs? Any photos?
Problem with up north is you could cuts strips off your underpants as a jigging lure with success in warmer water.

Got some blowies (weird looking ones, sort of olive-coloured and sized halfway between nor'westers and standard blowies) on a Bay Rubber out at the FADs.

Gillies also has one, there
Gillies also has one, there are a few other brands out there. I was hoping to try mine soon, but then I don't really want to catch blowfish, big or small =(

Yes my apologies, Gillies
Yes my apologies, Gillies make them, which I remembered while in bed in moment of intimacy last night.
I knew there was more but only remembered when in bed and would have been clobbered if I jumped out of bed and fired the computer up at midnight in moment of Eureka.
I would be interested to see photos of fish preferably south of Lancelin.
Itll be interesting to see what people catch on them in the south in the future in the southern region of WA or more metro based.
With all that movement in the water they look like they would unresistable to some species especially the way they are rigged.

I have used those squids
I have used those squids before. The R2S ones witht he weight in them are quite good.
I think it maybe the large amount of "movement" in the material behind the head that provides great enticement to the fish.
A bit like a flie but only much bigger with lots of fluid movement.

Placcie bits
The placcie bits get molested by everything up here, don't last long. We were using rubber bands to keep makeshift skirts stuck over the hooks to look like legs.

Yeah, for what you have to
Yeah, for what you have to pay for them, you'd think they'd be a bit more "bulletproof", and yes, Tim, that was the same as the blowies I got...in fact, the first time the jig came back up, there was a blowie on each hook!

jigs
I have gotten right in to them and have a 50/50 catch rate bait/jigs on the dhuies!!!
my collection started with RABA RABA'S (top left) nephew caught 5 different species in one day with them(no blowies). Bottom left are the powerjigs and they have accounted for a couple of dhuies(no blowies). My fav's are the occtas(6 on right hand side) accounted for a few dhuies. They come in a wide range of sizes. I will generally drop one down before my bottom bashing rig and leave it set in the rod holder allowing the boat to apply the action(heavy jigging not required). My largest dhuie was on the 300gram red !!! Can't see why the lighter ones wouldn't account for a few fish inshore!!!

Got a few.....they work.
Would be good to retro fit some new rubber skirts for them.....
Hook size is some times suss, but with the right drag setting....like milking a cow

Caught a good King George (540mm) and a Pink today on 60 grammers in shallow water
The lighter ones on light gear are great fun

I think one brand uses a certain style of hook where the hook size/style can inhibit hook ups on larger fish. The hook style also appears to be less effective in quite shallow water although the heavier guage hook is welcome on heavier line classes.

One fish chewed through the hook length today on one of the jigs. I dont think this particular Japanses jig uses Kevlar length.
Up North or on larger jigs assist hooks would be fine but smaller species Id like to rig myself.
I know the style of hook prefered and would like to buy hook length.
Anyone know whats used on the lighter Japanese versions as hook length?
Can you buy the material?
