New to perth. Want to fish. No idea where. Take me with you
Hi guys , i'm a new intl student here in perth 25/m . Have a surf outfit and some 7ft general purpose ( says on the tag ) rods have and been fishing in applecross and claremont jettys since i got here.
So far have caught 1 small herring and 20 million blowfish. Have also tried Woodman point and the North / South moles with absolutely no luck at all. Have been using cooked prawns as bait ( only thing i have been able to find that is not frozen in a solid block ) and I have recently found a fresh fish shop in cockburn which sells nice bait sized squid and prawns and am planning to try and catch some proper fish ( i cant ID any species , by proper i mean something people actually target / anything but blowfish ).
I live in the Cockburn area and drive so i dont mind pretty much going anywhere, anytime. I'm a very late sleeper usually sleep at 4-5am so night fishing would be awesome . If anyone is bored and looking for a fishin buddie and possibly can help me out a bit with what im doing wrong ( everything ). That would be awesome . Please PM me here . Cheers
P.S i am a catch and release fisher. No idea how to clean and gut a fish / use a stove / cook anything for that matter / transport fish in my car etc. But if you want whatever fish i pull up it's yours.

Hi Emotionism
Can you describe your surf outfit? How much tackle, and what sort do you have? This will give us a better idea of what you might need to get into some better fishing.

heya , i bought the
heya , i bought the tacklebox from BCF, the 250 piece one that comes with everything in it and ive also purchased those pre-tied snapper and whiting rigs.
I use normal baitholder hooks or suicide hooks and i have a collection of soft plastics squidgies i think and the rubber prawn lures. i have a roll of fluoro i use as leader and 25 lb mono for normal line. also have 12lb line and 20lb line i keep as spare coz my lines ALWAYS TANGLE beyond hope and i have to cut out a huge chunk. Dont think the problem lies with when i put the line on as BCF does that for me. i usually tie a running sinker rig with an ezyrig with about 1ft of leader frm the weight and the leader is tied to the mainline with a swivel in between so the ezyrig doesnt slide down to the bait .
Using a shimano combo 7.1ft 25lb rating max and a slazenger combo 25lb too and a Cheap $40 10ft surf rod with a penn prestige also rated at 25lb i think . Would love to catch n release a gummy shark one day and told the guy at BCF as such and walked out with a set of owner 4/0 circle hooks and i tie it on my running sinker with a whole medium sized prawn as bait. so far. nothing has even bitten it . ever . was at ammo jetty at woodman point for this purpose. for the river i just use a paternoster with a small weight.
All advice + help greatly appreciated
Note: all terminology given by google, i just google "how to tie fishing rigs etc" "fishing rigs for surf in australia " so if anything is wrong pls feel free to correct me. Was googling my way thru fishing till it occured to me to try a forum

Bait
Hey I'd love to help however I can with my limited knowledge,
The first time I ever fished was at ammo jetty.
You can catch some really good bread and butter fish at the ammo. For scalies and garfish you want to use raw coral prawns here, you buy this at any fishing shop or some petrol stations. Use a size 10 long shank hook and use a tiny piece of shelled prawn. You will also do well with burley and a sabiki rig (baitcatcher) with 3 small hooks, ask bcf for them.
Tailor at the ammo involves using mulies/pilchards as bait on a gang hook 3/0 to 5/0 In size. I'm on my iPhone so a bit hard to reply but check try and buy this book called how to catch a fish by Steve correia. Good one to keep on the shelf and Geoff wilsons knots.
Hopefully I can help a bit more when I'm on a keyboard lol.

Tangles
Oh To minimize tangles:
- try not to reel with slack line
- after casting, manually close the bail and put the line in the roller
First time I used braided lines I would get wind knots and think I had faulty line :p

Hey, i could only share with
Hey, i could only share with you what i know and my experience.
If you want to catch some herrings, garfish and mullet. Try and buy burley cage from BCF, it's a small white cage for you to put berley in it.
Berley - I mixed pollard, buy them from City Farmers and mix with water. You can add pollard oil or fish oil if you like. Fish oil can be bought in BCF too.
Use, a long shank size 6-10 hook. Just get the Jarwis walker brand from Kmart, $1.00 i think.
Check this page out. Lots of good info in there to help you.
