Navara upgrade time - but which model?

Guys,

Looking at moving my petrol 2007 navara to a diesel 2010. Mine is currently a STX which is close to the 2010 model ST. The 2010 STX has a 140kw Vs 126kw ST and a little more bling. Otherwise pretty much the same and about $5K difference.

Anyone got one or know of anyone who's got the ST or STX and any opinions on it? Is the extra 14 kw worth the $$$?

I tow the Stabi heaps and do a bit of off road sand work. So the 2.2 tonne on the back makes it work. this has been the biggest killer between the petrol just not having enough grunt (especially beach launching) and looking at auto as the clutch just isn't up to scratch in the older models. Apparently Nissan is saying that there has been 8 upgrades in the clutch in just over 2 years.

Any help willl be great.

I have an 07 ST-X 2.5 Diesel

Wed, 2011-04-27 20:49

I have an 07 ST-X 2.5 Diesel manual, I have put a Unichip in it, so the power would be up around the 140+ kw mark anyway.  I was going to buy a Hilux but couldn't go past this one for the extras and the price.

I just towed a 2.5 t boat to Exxy and came back with fuel economy figures of between 14-16L/100km, that was fully loaded and sitting on 100km/h the whole way, I was stoked.  I tows the boat better than my 80 series intercooled T diesel does and much better economy.  Normal driving I get 7-8L/100km

In the sand it hauls, just don't ride the clutch in high range.  The only down side is that you need low range to pull out the boat, which isn't really a problem.  I have plans for a big exhaust to help the off boost power a bit more.   If you got a 140 kw model and chipped it it would be insane and in auto as well.  You may have to fit a after market oilcooler if you're doing heaps of towing and sand work.  Just remember to look at the torque figures as they are the important ones for towing and low down grunt.

check out the Aus Navara forum, its pretty good:   http://www.navaraforum.net/       plenty of helpful crew there.

best of luck with the new purchase mate

I have the stock ST and it

Wed, 2011-04-27 21:51

I have the stock ST and it pulls my Southwind fine, which must be going on 2 tonne loaded. Can sit on 100km'h and economy is good, any higher and it sucks the tank hard.

Mate has the old STX auto and I think the auto takes away heaps of power. He towed my boat with it and I think it didn't do as well. No dramas with the clutch in mine, but some guys using them for lawn mowing rounds have biotched about them at times.

Son has the ST-X

Wed, 2011-04-27 22:16

My son recently upgraded from a 100 series 4.2L petrol cruiser to a 2007 ST-X 2.5L turbo diesel (common rail model) with 6 speed manual and there's no comparison. I know we're comparing petrol with turbo diesel but the cruiser was a real thirsty slug.

During the test drive, we hitched up the Trailblazer and towed it up and down some serious hills and it performed remarkably well. On the highway it purrs along and it can get away from you if you aren't paying attention....the cruise control helps there!!

It drives quite nicely on the highway and the interior is well appointed...much nicer than the base model. You forget you're driving a diesel as it's very responsive and reasonably quiet...he's more than happy with it.

There are aftermarket clutch ktis available, if the standard unit fails...cost a bit more but apparently they're far better.

Nissan are supposed to be bringing out a V6 turbo diesel rated at 550Nm of torque...that's serious pulling power, but I'm guessing it's got a price tag to match!

I'd like to find out more about the Unichip that hunderdive fitted to his, if you could post some info, that would be much appreciated, thanks.

regards
rusty...

Hmm.....

Thu, 2011-04-28 00:14

I just received the phone call today to say my new Navara is waiting for me at the dealers..  Its the new v6 turbo STX 550 model..

170kw and 550 nm torque.  and a 7 speed tip tronic auto..

Should be a good step up from the 06 glxr triton I have now.. which is /was on the limit for towing my boat.  and at only 200km per tank towing is a real thirsty vr petrol auto guzzler..

Will let you guys know some figures as they come to hand over the next few weeks...

Oh yeah and on the test drive this thing has some balls...   Its the quietest diesel no road nosie apart from the aircon and some serious getup..   The salesman actually suggested I better slow down..  Looked at the speedo and was way over the limit  so nice to drive...

But it's out of my budget at the moment.  I'll be interested in some numbers once you've had it for a bit.

I'll be flipping the coin

Thu, 2011-04-28 10:26

I'll be flipping the coin later this year between the new ST-X 550 or the new VW amarok - amarok has some great specs, good safety rating, traction control etc, and nicely fitted out too. - still wondering when Toyota is gonna give the hilux a facelift - it's getting left behind at the moment...

Dan, you migth be on the money here

I was reading a review on them and it's pretty good. Only real down side is the same motor in all models. The HighRide looks good. 2.8 tonne tow, handles like a European car. Twin turbo. Worth checking out I think

3L T/D, tows 3T - I've had 2 at work and they are very good. I personally like my Hilux better, but as you said towing is an issue. I've never owned one, but a few guys I know reckon the Ford Ranger is a nice unit as well.

Depending on what Nissan do with the Patrol, my next car at the end of the year will be a Patrol or Landie ute - that'll fix load carrying and towing issues short of buying an Iveco........do you realy need a dual cab
