Conditions dictate which gear
I really comes down to the state of the track/beach and the weight of your vehicle as to which range you need. Lower your tyre pressure to between 15-20psi, or down to 12psi if really soft sand - but drive carefully so as not to spin a tyre off the rim. Then, if the beach is firm or it has been raining heaps, high range will be adequate. If you are bogging down in high range, stop, select low range and try again. If you are not an experienced 4WD'er, take care on the beach. It can be easy to get yourself into problems. Do not go below the high tide line unless you are sure the sand is firm. It is too easy to get hopelessly bogged and end up with water around your car. And if there is a lot of weed on the beach, watch out, as the sand can cover areas of weed and it is like driving into a tank trap. And when going off road, always carry a compressor, shovel, snatch strap and rated shackles (not Supacheap/Bunnings/Repco standard shackles), and make sure you know where to attach the strap to your vehicle so you don't kill yourself or somebody else if you rip off whatever you have attached your strap too.
Not trying to put you off beach driving - but best to go with somebody else, or do some research before venturing too far on your own.

Just make sure in soft
Just make sure in soft sand that your revs are kept up.. dont drive like your in the supermarket car park!!!! if your revs do start dropping down make your gear shifts QUICK to keep your momentem and if ya do bog right down STOP!! otherwise you'll dig yourself deeper, bottom out and make it harder to get yourself out. Like the other lads said anywhere between 12-20 psi tyre pressure (chase down ferret on here, he has good trye deflators). A set of maxtrax from ARB are always handy and give you a bit more confidence if you know you can get yaself un-stuck. Keep above the high tide lines on the beach.
Overall just go for it mate theres only one way to learn

After tonights storm
I'd be very careful driving that stretch of beach until it settles.
