Mindarie Whiting

Managed a few hours on Saturday afternoon to get the boat out, the water was an absolute dream so we headed out to do some drifting past the reef.  The action started as soon as we felt the sinkers hit the bottom.  Caught our bag of these guys in less than 30 minutes - thanks to all the double headers!  Haven't caught any whiting since moving here from SA, and was hoping they were KG's but these will have to do!  I think they are silver whiting from looking at the Fishwrekopedia unless someone else knows?   I do know they took bloody ages to fillet!

Anyway, had a fantastic day and I'm sure there were many happy fisherman on Saturday too - conditions were unbelievable.

Cheers!

Great catch, I believe the ones we catch here are a mix of school and sand whiting.

 - Sand or School. I call them Sandies.

Dont always bother filleting. Scale , cover in batter and deepfry, or panfry in butter. Gut shrivels up into a small ball and the "fillets" peel off nicely. I call this "chipies" and is delish!

Awesome, I'll try that next time!  I kept a bunch of frames to try as bait or berley - has anyone had success with this?

Frames

Always try to throw a few whiting frames into the mincer when making up burley (along with herring, skippy, snook, tuna, any other fish frames, squid, occky, prawns, shellfish, chicken feed pellets and lots of tuna oil).

I wouldn't have filleted them all, as whole fresh whiting make great bait for lots of things - especially the pinks.

always good to get a feed of whiting, when they're on they're on!. Generally I get sand and school whiting on flat sand bottom and KG's seem to hang around the edges of weed bed and reef where it meets the sand. A weighted burley bucket set on the bottom with a rope is a sure way to get the firing.

Sandies

In my opinion they are one of the best tasting fish in the sea.  I prefer sandies over KG's anyday.  Bit finicky with the filleting, but the meal thereafter is well worth it.
