There was a thread up a while ago about someone making them. I think it was the bunno boys? I know Southcity104 made one up but he said his doesnt swim like mine (witchdoctor) so there must be a difference there.
They would be pretty easy to make. Just keep in mind that actual witchdoctors are weighted, not just a block of wood, so if you want it to swim like one you'll have to match the weighting so its balanced the same. Try to keep it so it will float and make sure you use a decent paint/waterproofing layer. Not sure where to get the mirror. Its just mirror backed plexi or polycarbonate though.
Not sure on other teaser types. You could make a bird like one they have at bluewater. Would be interesting to find some holographic mylar tape to make those fish school ones (at $30 a pop they arent cheap if you want a school)
just finished mine. A heap of el cheapo plastic squids and feather teasersand a bundle of old CD's strung on a 400 lb handline........not fancy, will see if it works ..................
Plastic paint stirrers with a little reflective tape on them running of some 200 lb line - we have 5 in a row bout a metre apart - didn't worry the SBT s last Monday off Dunsborough - plus they float down slowly when you stop - no dramas with line tangles etc.
out of a piece of treated pine i cut a 45 deg angle in the front and about 600mm long and glued and screwed perspects mirror to all the sides of it and installed a piece of lead about six or seven inches long in the back bottom side of it to help it track. tried to replicate the witch doctor but shinnier, when up in exmouth last year we used it for the first time and raised a sail fish within the first five minutes. whether or not we would of caught it without it we'll never know, but i was convinced it was the teasers influence.
Hey buddy Made my own witch doctor I posted something on a thread last week I think it was called looking for bird teaser have a search for that otherwise messag me and I can either send u info or help u put one together nothing like catching fish using gear u made with your own hands and a little elbow grease
well, if you want to meet Peter Pakula himself he is staying in perth tonight and will be at the internal airport for a flight leaving to exxy tomoz at 9.30am so if u got there 8.30-9am you might get to meet him otherwise he is at gamex and that other tounament (forgot name)
well, went for a troll on the 3 mile this morning with the CD teaser.....
Wind was terrible, bowing a gale from the east. Calmed down after we came back.
Trolled for a few hours, heaps of week, no macs or tuna but hard to keep weed off the lures. Skirts were best. Had a swin at Hillarys beach which was the higghlight.......
CD's worked excellently (apart from no fish) but after about an hour, alll the shiny coating was stripped off and all that was left was the clear plastic, and after another hour, the clear plastic was starting to break up.........oh well, back to the drawing board.
Were you using writable cds or pressed cds? The other diy teasers i've heard of are the ol beer can ones. Drill a hole and you have a big cup faced pusher (probably more for billies?). That escapin site had some interesting metal teasers that were pretty cheap (i think it was a set, not per shape?)
A witchy should be looked at as a separate object. It is a underwatwater teasing object. The one on the surface is made to stirr the fish up and is called a "daisy chain" in my lingo. No need to pay for this, just use a bunch of bird teasers, CD's and most importantly a Pakula pusher +/- a hook in the end. You need the birds to stirr up the water, the Cds to flash, and the squid pusher at the end to cause a stirr. I have mine without a hook, but the number of times it has been hit makes me wonder!!
All off this tied/linked with very heavy nylon and swivels. apart from the pusher, which has wire (placky wrapped evil strenght).
Underneath it all is the witchy.
Neels
PS I believe the CDs are overated, and if you place the daisy far enough back the "birds" create enough fus on the water, and the witchy provides the flash. JMO.
Went on a Game charter from the Bay of Islands in NZ. The skipper used an energy drink can similar to the V energy drink. The cans are strong, got good colours in the water and leave a good bubble trail.
PS We hooked about 7 stripies for the day, none of them stayed connected for longer than 5 minutes.
I use three bird teasers interspaced with a few glitter bug floats (the ones with prism tape and rattle) with heavy swivles in between. Works well on the bluefin and sometimes kings here in SA. Have been considering putting a large hookless pusher on the end as per Crasny's suggestion. Have had one bluefin hit one of the glitter bugs and launch airborne. Tends to work better on the calmer days (i guess the noise made stands out more). Most things which generate flash and disturb the water should work.
For the witchdoctors, according to their site, the main effect is the 'thumping' from the lure moving which is meant to immitate a large predator smashing at bait, so other fish will want some of the action. The flashes are apparently only a secondary effect, but you have to admit they look pretty impressive on a sunny day!
Is that wire going through the lure? If it doesnt track well like that maybe see about screwing on a SS towing point? With it wobbling side to side wouldnt it be pulling on opposite sides of the lure at each wobble? Will the lure moving wear the line? (ali doesnt like being bent back and forth).
Looks good Ron not sure how it will tow though I would probably but a ring screw in the top of it that is how I have done mine and it gives it a good swaying motion under tow the holes in your might create bubbles in the water which I imagine would be a good thing did u weight the front nose I found u had to do that to get it to swim when u take off
Well, not will, just might after a fair while of trolling. Not fun to loose a teaser. Experimenting is all part of it though, it might work better, it might not, but if you dont try you'll never know (just looked like a nice one not worth loosing). Does it sink or float atm?
Are u heading out on weekend Ron we are going out sunday trying to talk the mrs into us going trolling but she's not keen she prefers bottom bashing so we might have to do both looks like west end is the plans troll sunrise bottom fish till lunch then troll on the way in water should be warm and clear again by the weekend

All this talk of witch doctors got me excited -on a charter i went out on in Port Douglas the deckies fed one out in the lure spread and we had hook up after hook up -
I am heading out tomorrow to west end and decided i would knock up a witch doctor -bit of a rush job -started it monday and finished last night -nice piece of jarrah with had a lump of lead in the back (although i dont know that the originals are weighted to the rear) a bit of left over paint from the carport and a cheap perspex mirror from bunnings! - all up cost was $7 (the mirror!) - i will let you know how we go tommorow :-)
515mm long by 45x90mm section. Front is 45 degree cut. Centre of the weight is approximately 230mm back from the front of the lure (which would make it about 50-60mm in front of the 'natural centre of gravity', so its front weighted).
Didnt get a chance to weight it, but my guess is it weighs around 1.6-1.8kg. If it weighed more than 2kg it would start to sink.
Its not that hard to put the info in excel and you can have it tell you how much it will float and also how much weight to add and where.
Go to the image, right click on it and go properties. Then copy the location (ends in JPG). Then paste it in this thread and add [IMG ] before it and [/IMG ] after it (but take out the spaces in the IMG tags)
I think you entered the address, then it converted it to a link then added the image tags (so it thought it didnt need to make it an image as it saw a hyperlink not text). If you paste the text in in one go it works fine (dont let it go blue)
Also, the preview button is useful for seeing if it will work without actually posting it.
You are not alone. I have yet to successfully put a pic in an existing thread with the current site set up. 12 months or so ago I could but the site has changed.
They have both the 'brackets' and the screws at oceanside. Were about 1/3rd the price of the same ones at bunnings or at boat places!. Make sure your screws go deep enough, have a coarse thread and pre-drill with the right bit. Also make sure its as square as you can get and in line (dont want the lure swimming sideways).
I wonder if theres any easy way to tune them if you're installing your towing points yourself. Someone said they test the witchdoctors to make sure they swim straight.
When I first tried mine it kept swimming too the right and popping to the surface so I just bent the tow point left until it swam straight it swims straight and about 1-1.5 meteres at 8 knts any faster and it swims sideways
mine (the red and white one) made of jarrah - it doesnt track straight but rather it goes in large spirals and breaks the surface prob every 20 seconds - i kinda like the action although it may not be the way it should track i figure it covers the surface down to "x" no of meters -
Used it on the weekend and had about 15metres of line out the back - one observation is it probably needs to be about another 5+metres back -we were trolling at 7-8 knots

hey guys
i have just made my own out of a piece of form ply, 45 the end, sealed it all over with marine glue,
put some ally sheet metal on the two big sides, and s/steel mosake tiles on the others.
(polished the crap out of it till its shiny)
a big heavy bit of ally tie wire up front for the towing and a hunk of big reo bar up the back for weight to get it to track.
i am new to the trolling with teasers thing and dont know alot about it, but i will have a crack anyway.
now just waiting to test it out, come some good weather
i do have a brought bird teaser daisy chain in case this one all goes to shit.
heres a pic of the finished thing
cheers ron

dont know mate, will try it and find out
i did have some heavy wire in the middle of the 45 bit, but when i gave it a good yank to see how strong it was it came out,
by then i had already glued the shiny stuff on so had to drill a hole through the sides.
should of tested the towing point out first!

nah mate,i have the weight in
nah mate,
i have the weight in the rear, and your prob right with the screw in ring(didnt think about that at the time)
i did have some wire coming out but it pulled out, on a good yank
it is only form ply so not sure how the screw in ring would go.(would have to have a long screw on it)
its all new to me anyway, i normally just chuck a couple of lures out and drive off.
have never played with teasers, they obviously work though.
i might look at doing that now and get rid of the ally wire, which as holk said will prob break.
after hearing from other guys on here, it seems that anything will work anyway
only one way to find out!!!

Measured up my witchdoctor.
Measured up my witchdoctor. Here are the specs:
515mm long by 45x90mm section. Front is 45 degree cut. Centre of the weight is approximately 230mm back from the front of the lure (which would make it about 50-60mm in front of the 'natural centre of gravity', so its front weighted).
Didnt get a chance to weight it, but my guess is it weighs around 1.6-1.8kg. If it weighed more than 2kg it would start to sink.
Its not that hard to put the info in excel and you can have it tell you how much it will float and also how much weight to add and where.

Action is good. By not swim
Action is good. By not swim straight, I mean swim to the left or to the right. You definitely want them wobbling with all the action you can get

When I first tried mine it
When I first tried mine it kept swimming too the right and popping to the surface so I just bent the tow point left until it swam straight it swims straight and about 1-1.5 meteres at 8 knts any faster and it swims sideways

mine (the red and white one)
mine (the red and white one) made of jarrah - it doesnt track straight but rather it goes in large spirals and breaks the surface prob every 20 seconds - i kinda like the action although it may not be the way it should track i figure it covers the surface down to "x" no of meters -
Used it on the weekend and had about 15metres of line out the back - one observation is it probably needs to be about another 5+metres back -we were trolling at 7-8 knots
cheers
