Just wondering if anyone has connected a Garmin to a lowrance VHF? I have a Garmin 451s with NMEA0183 connection and the cable with the radio but both manuals arent very clear on Rx/Tx, out/in, -/+. Been searching for a cuppla days now and come to the unsupported conclusion that:
Tx(out) on GPS is nmea0183 in(-) VHF
Rx(in) on GPS is nmea0183 out(+) VHF
Cheers

I connected a Garmin gps to
I connected a Garmin gps to an old LCX unit I had when the lowrance gps aerial died and it was not replacable.
I remember there was not a lot of info on it but managed to work it out in the end... I will see if I kept my notes from when I did it.

I had a quick look at both
I had a quick look at both manuals and this is what I would do:
Blue Tx(out) on GPS -> Yellow nmea0183 in(+) on VHF
Black Ground on GPS -> Green nmea0183 in(-) on VHF
Brown Rx(in) on GPS -> Orange nmea0183 out(+) on VHF
Black Ground on GPS -> Shield Ground on VHF (this is also the nmea0183 out(-))
The garmin has two single ended NMEA0183 ports. Each port has one receive and one transmit wire, but the two ports can be used seperately to connect two different devices.
The link-8 has one NMEA0183 port but the port is differential so it has two receive wires + and - and two transmit wires + and -.
Page 9 and 10 of this document gives an explaination of how to connect single ended and differential NMEA devices together:

Thanks for that. The next step was to setup an N2K network or ditch the garmin for a lowrance chartplotter seeing as Bias Boating has them for $799...4 days after i brought an elite 5.
