Do a search on "echo
Do a search on "echo sounders" there's a couple of very good posts to be found with info on how to manually set em up. The auto settings often filter out lots of information. Ocean side also sell a very good book on the subject. Once you have done the research go out n put it all in practice somewhere you can we the bottom! I have a garmin myself but have found It easier to read with blue screen rather than white.

The best thing you could do
The best thing you could do is buy this book.

Oceanside Tackle also sell it. I had no idea at all about sounders until I read this book. Well worth the $50.00

Before you go spending money
Before you go spending money you could try a couple of things with that unit. Put the surface clarity up a bit and the same with noise rejection. I'm assuming you may have some issues with both so it's worth a try. Do this with the unit in auto to start with then if need be play around with the sensitivity. It's only a start but if you have not tried this its wort a crack before going any further.
