Live bait in Exmouth
Submitted by brimhunter on Tue, 2014-02-11 22:14
Just a question from a newbie travelling to Exmouth for 10 days in May
Is it easy to catch Hardyheads in Exmouth and if so how?
Can I use baitchaser rig to catch them and where ?
I want to try live bait or as fresh as I can get it,trying for Queenies and or what ever else I may get
If someone can help would be much appreciated.
Alas ill be fishing from shore no boat
Many thanks in advance

Hi there Brimhunter
it is very easy to catch hards heads iether with a small thro net {u need a netting lience }or the bait chaser rigs ,there is a bit around at the moment alone the beachs in the gulf , it wont be long and they will be around the west side and then we will get the big queenfish
I seen you have put up earler post that u are coming to exxy and looking for some to have a fish with , i think u might find it earser if you fill in your details not just a memder for 1year and 25 weeks, i look at that before i put my hand up to take some one out on my boat ,i just dont know how u are fishing with
hope this helped a bit there brimhunter

Throw net in the shallows @
Throw net in the shallows @ Wappet Creek, low tide works good near the mouth wear it widens out, live mullet is the gun bait for jacks at various spots a bit further up stream. Beware of stonefish, wear appropriate footwear! Can get little queenies and trevs near the mouth too

Bundegi Area at dawn will
Bundegi Area at dawn will often have hardyheads pushed up against the beach, with the big queenie, and mackies not far behind. Simply go for a walk and look for the birds initially , they will lead you to the hardyheads. Some guys just jag a few when they are thick on a treble, and then simply leave it where it is hooked and cast it out again (although deliberate jagging is probably illegal)You only need to cast a metre or so behind the school of hardyheads and it will get taken. However Ive found first light is the best time and it can be all over by 7am.

The first time I went we pulled up at the Learmonth and rolled the swags out at 3am, woke up in the morn to see mass of them around the jetty occasionally splitting when being chased. Was up there last Sept and none to be seen???

Researching for bait option
Researching for bait option in exmouth for august. We will be launching boats at tantabiddi boat ramp daily.
Is it worth taking a cast net (i have a licence) to the ramp each day. Is it possible there will be hardyheads around the ramp area?
And will they make good live / fresh boat for boat fishing there?

Always good live bait
I have found that live hardy heads where very good live bait from spangos, reds, tuna and a Spanish mack. What you have left over from the day before use as berly, catch fresh bait every day before going out. You used to be able to catch hardy heads just to the north of the tantas ramp but don't know about now, best check with fisheries beforehand about legality of doing so now.

Hardy heads
I just got back from exy a couple of days ago and did not see a single school of hardy heads at tantas for the week i was there.
The big schools at bundegi are still there though.

theres some markers north of
theres some markers north of the marina, i think some kind of pearl farm, or something i have no clue. baitcatcher rigs dropped down brought schools of scalys or some other bait fish swarming and easy to catch. Sorry for vague details this was a few years ago
Fishing and catching are two different things. But i want to learn how to catch.
