Light Vs. Heavy Gear

I know a lot of people fish 30-50lb for demersal species, but someone told me about a guy who fishes a 2500 size reel, 4-6kg rod and 8lb braid.

He then went on and said he got a 20+kg sambo along with decent snappers and dhuies (up to 8kg).

My question is how do you not get busted up on light gear on rough ground, or do the fish not try and bury you if you fish light?

Thanks,

Andrew

I always use light gear I

I always use light gear I have a 2500 size reel with 15lb on it and about 5m of 20lb mono as a leader on a 4-6kg rod, only problem is when the wind is up it's hard to hold bottom with the smaller weights used, most of the time it will get the fish up but sometimes there just to good. biggest dhu I've got on it would be 13kg so it's defiantly possible and a hell of a lot more fun.

3000 reel, 20 lb braid. Great

3000 reel, 20 lb braid. Great fun, but you get bricked a fair bit. Need to go real hard for the first 5m. If a sambo grabs it, only luck will help you. Saw till land a 15 kg plus sambo on 15 lb tufline ( probably runs around 25 lb breaking), he worked hard for his fish let me tell ya!

Only way to go.

Giggle, that rod is only

Giggle, that rod is only rated to PE1 and that line breaks @ 21lb ;)

Its fun, except in two rocks where the big sambos get me every f**king time.

I'm certainly a fan of

I'm certainly a fan of fishing light and in general, you can overcome most fish (but you can still get runs of bad luck...). I generally only fish PE2 for most demersals. Breaking ranging 25-30, but I fish it with appropriate drag for 20. Have landed a fair few good sized fish incl 10kg dhuie and 25kg+ sambo on that outfit. Quite important when fishing light to set your drag right (preferably) by scales and have super strong knots. Have landed a quite a few sized good demersal and pelagics on 8lb too though, but for most demersals it'll be too light to win most of the fights. I find PE2 a good medium and it still gives you a decent fight for a just sized fish.

Depends a lot on what you're fishing though. I fish mostly jigs, plastics and driftbaits, so the rods can handle them fine. Running snapper sinkers can be a bit different. Also, the type of rig and the angle of the line can affect how they fight.

As for how you avoid bustups on light gear: mostly luck! Its really only being bricked that will be a problem (well, plus the problem of big dhuies not going back well if they're spent on 4kg line). Accurately setting your drag and properly pushing your gear to the limits can give you precious extra power. Also, you can focus on techniques that allow the fish to jump on higher off the reef too. Choosing to fish on certain kinds of structure will also affect your chances of landing something. Unless you've fished say 20 or even 30lb first and knocking over most fish, it probably wouldnt be a good idea to start fishing 4kg. Not really fair on the angler or the fish.

jesse is good with the light

Thu, 2011-06-02 21:22

jesse is good with the light gear 12-20lb rod sole 4000reel and 20lb braid .60lb mono leader .he has had dhuies 20kg and very really gets busted off ,I guess its knowing your gears limits and knowing your fish and what they are likely to do when hooked  jesse uses his fingers to control the drag .Its just practice.I can't go as light as Im to heavy handed and get busted of .Practice ,practice.Jesse mostly fishes soft plastics so only 3oz heads .
