Salting the mulies and drying it out can make it last a long time, but nothing beats fresh bait, another way to keep it fresh is saltwater ice slurry and leaving the mulies in there keeps them quite fresh, also if you want to keep it for another session put the mulies in saltwater and then freeze it.

keep them frozen!

Borrow / hire an engel and keep them frozen for the duration of the trip! I personally don't rate salted mulies as bait.

Failing that keeping them in a good quality ice box (which is not opened frequently) will help them to stay frozen for longer - particularly if they are a good quality mulie.

My preference is for the Polar IQF (individually quick frozen) mulies that you can buy in 1kg packets. As they are individually frozen you can grab half a dozen from the packet and leave the rest on ice. Also, as there is no 'ice block' in the bottom of the packet they do not turn to mush as soon as they warm up.

I have successfully kept the Polar IQF mulies for 4 days in an ice box - they were cold but not frozen on the last day but still casting perfectly.

Stay away from the indonesian imported mulies, worst bait ever and when its unfrozen the guts start to fall out or will soon fall out nasty stuff, probaly good for chum making though.

I agree with buschy those

I agree with buschy those individual frozen mulie packets in the 1kg bags are the best. Dont have to muck around breaking them off to keep the other half frozen or whatever.

and yes just hire an engel

and yes just hire an engel freezer. I bought a small one off my dads mate for my camping trips to keep bait frozen in places where i cant just go and buy bait. Money well spent.

I now buy the polar iqf

I now buy the polar iqf mulies in 15 kg blocks. There individually frozen as well and the block keeps frozen for days without ice. Bought an esky that just fits the entire block in and we just break a dozen off at a time and thaw them out. That way the esky gets opened less. And there the best quality mulies that ive come across. Different sizes available as well. Polar bait is in freo, look em up on the net. Last time the 15kg block was about 55 bux.

Great value

Probably about 25% less than buying them in 1kg blocks. Thanks for the tip I will be looking into this!

Yer its the best thing ive found. be careful, you will need a chest freezer at home, or buy them the day before you go and stick them in the esky. Its a bloody big block. lol. Last block we took to kalbarri, left perth fri morn, came back mon morn, monday morning we threw about 2 kgs of nearly frozen mulies in the water. there was 4 of us fishing.

fresh bait

We have 6 coral trout at work and the second you put bait which has been defrosted for too long or has been refrozen after being defrosted before, they become very wary and only take it unless they are extremely hungry.  Soon as you put freshly defrosted stuff in, wham, its like a feeding frenzy.  I will try and take some video this weekend to put up to show the difference.

once they do start to defrost, i like to throw a few handfuls of dry pollard in the bag of mulies... they stay firmer and the pollard soaks up the blood and juice making a kind of burley aswell.
