Kalbarri Holiday

Arrived here at 3pm. A trip with no incidents although I wont be taking Indean Ocean Drive again. The road north of Jurian is crap!
Weather here is crap. Easterlies and sunshine. It just gets me a bit excited.
Before dinner I had a quick fish at Chinamans. Baits getting hammered before dark. I managed 2 very undersized Tailor and 2 of the same Mulloway. About the size of decent Whiting. The river mouth seems to be a congragating place for the juveniles. In the morning I am getting up early and checking a few places south of the river mouth. The conditions are pefect for throwing anything without weight so let's hope the fish are around.

Hey Uncut,
I'm heading up to Kalbarri in a couple of weeks. I was planning on taking the Indian Ocean Highway route up there.. it seems more scenic.
When you say the road north of Jurien is crap.. does that mean its like corrugated, bumpy, potholes etc? Did it slow you down.. like was the road so poor that it slowed down the trip? Was it dangerous to do the speed limit?
I look forward to seeing your fishing reports over the next few days mate too. If I catch anything when I'm up there, I'll write all about it.

Indian Ocean drive
The road IMO is dated and quite narrow in comparison to the Brand Hwy. We travelled up on Monday of the long weekend and caught up with some travellers under load. It's hard to pass and the trailers will fall off the side of the road and spit gravel at you. After having travelled this road a few times now I am over it. The novelty of the scenic route north of Lancelin has worn off.
As for the fishing....... I worked really hard this morning for no reward other than a solid bust-off on a fresh Whiting. No sign of Tailor despite a solid 2 hour popping session in some pretty good water. My wife and I (well, I hijacked here) went for a 4x4 run up the river and we made it out alive. She really doesn't trust my sense of direction LOL. Took some great photos along the way and I flicked some lures around but it was the middle of the day.
I fished hard again this arvo and up until 7:30PM. One small Mulloway (released) and a Cobbler (for brekkie). Bait wasn't in the water long enough due to large numbers of peckers even after dark. Oh well.... we shall persever.

Be sure to spill the beans if you do any good, I'm heading up on the 16th and can't wait! I was tossing up whether to go the ocean road, looks like I will stick to the inland route

The ocean road is fine until you get caught behind nomads, boats, the occasional truck, etc. Saves only half hour or so off the trip to Dongara but it is a good drive and if you get it good its sweet. Not a bad road per se but if you need to overtake past Jurien then can be a pain in the ass. Few mulloway around and plenty of tailor around at the moment. storm gars are back at Red Bluff too. Got a couple of macks on the weekend too
Cheers Mick

Thanks for the info on the road guys. It sounds like I might take the scenic route up there and the highway back down. There isn't a much more frustrating than being stuck behind caravans or trucks doing under the speed limit..
Uncut - its a shame you haven't had much luck yet. What you've done is basically the same thing I was planning on doing - popping for tailor and flicking lures for bream in the river :D
As Mick points out, the storm gars could be a good option. Fun to catch, delicious to eat, and killer bait..
