Just about got bitten!

Went fishing down a lake on the weekend. I stepped on this tiger snake!!!!!!
I had thongs on !. Lucky it didnt bite me!!!felt it under my foot and it shot out into the water. I grabbed the camera and got a few good shots
In the lake there is monster carp swiming around!

Its on a abandoned mansion property

I went down to the edge and stepped on this with thongs on. It shot out and into the water. Grabbed camera and got some shots. I then realised it was a tiger snake :( Lucky i didnt get bitten!

Tue, 2010-03-09 16:19

yeah had close call myself on Sunday when loading up the Jeep at home,
had my sandals on and small juvie Dugite went over my toes from under the car... just about wet myself as I had no real protection from a bite with sandals on.
Caught him and let him go a long way from home.

this is the third small one in the yard in a week, my fox terrier killed one on thursday as well the same size.

Almost got bitten by this guy

Tue, 2010-03-09 16:48

Almost got bitten by this guy on Monday night, a black headed whip snake, funnily enough, on my bedroom floor after sneaking in somehow.  Certainly wasn't expecting it on my way to bed.

Nice pics Marc.

yep

Apparently so: Although unlikely to cause more than passing discomfort to an adult, large specimens are possibly dangerous to children. All but one species attain less than one metre in length.

Frequently seen and commonly enters homes during active foraging efforts. Apparently common due to the high densities of favored skink prey

I get bitten by my python

Tue, 2010-03-09 17:03

I get bitten by my python almost on a fortnightly basis, [he's such a nice snake] and although it always draws blood, the shock of it is worse than the actual event, knowing how quick they can be, bugger having poisonous snakes in your house or stepping on the bloody things!!

Can't say for the rest, but for the python, pick it u and hold it by the body, just so the the head can't reach your face.  It will usually go into strike mode if it's not really tame.  Wave your other palm in front of it.  It will eventually strike at your palm.  You should be able to pull away faster then it can bite you.  Just keep doing that till it stops striking.  You will find that it will have learnt that it can't get you and will actually stop trying.  Love the feel of their skin.  Use to bath my Indian Rock Python with Lux. Have had about 15 - 20 of them.  Had a whole bunch of shedded skins, but when I moved here, they wouldn't allow me to bring them in.

we had dozens of olive

Wed, 2010-03-10 08:02

we had dozens of olive pythons turn up in the laundry when I was up at Fortescue River Roadhouse building the new camp.
The little buggers would get into the washing machine body and we had to strip off a panel to get them out, or the cleaning maids would not do our laundry...lol
loved the little buggers.

back in SAFFA land I had restrictor and poisonous snakes, while at school, till one of my semi poisonous water snakes ( nasty head ache is all you get from a bite)got out and found living in the shower cool, till my mum steped on it and got bitten on the toe.
Yes me and the snakes got tossed out after that...lol.. they became an attraction in my room at uni, till the house mother there saw them.

My sons mate and sister has a pair Simpson pythons, so the pressure is on me to get one past my wife lol...

Thanks for the tip Alfred,

Tue, 2010-03-09 17:42

Thanks for the tip Alfred, he's only been this way for about 6 months, I've started feeding him more, and trying to handle him more often, and he will normally only strike when I'm trying to feed or doing something in the enclosure. Once I've got him out , and realized I'm nothing to eat, the snake's fine.

little tip I learn years ago

Wed, 2010-03-10 08:06

little tip I learn years ago from a breeder,is to never feed them food from your hand, they will learn to associate your hand with food and strike at the hand when ever they see it then, expecting to get a meal.

I always had a long plastic tongs for that job, and when I picked up the feeding tongs the big mole snake I had would get all excited and come looking for his dinner. They learn very fast.

They should only associate your hand with soft touch and gentle handling. It's just like the Pavlov's dog and the bell research. google it.

Those Tigers are very aggressive. I have heard stories of them laying in wait along trails where dogs go for regular exercise so that they can bite them.
Dugites are evn worse though. I had two attack the tyres of my car when I drove past them on my way to a secret fishing spot on the Upper Swan.

Lucky

That was a lucky one for the tiger snake, he looks like a fairly big one and would have done you some serious damage.......

I got a baby Dugite the other day at home March is the time they hatch I believe.

Adam have a look at the floor wastes around your house I've had one small snake come in the house through one of these when the cap was knocked off when paving.

If the floor waste in the toilet or the bathrooms is at ground level this may have been how he got in.

amazing tiger snake photos

Tue, 2010-03-09 22:33

I was surprised to see such obvious stripes too, generally people bitten have trouble differentiating between a tiger and dugite.

I'm paranoid about snakes but I have to admit that really is a beautiful specimen.

Not happy to read Adam that snakes eat skinks, I thought it was the other way round, if you have goannas or skinks around, the snakes will stay away.  Not so confident foraging in the wood box now.  :-{

My friends flatmate has snakes, while he was away my friend caught an escapee in the backyard and put it back in one of the glass enclosures,,

When the flatmate came home he had one extra snake,,a cranky brown snake,,seems it was not an escapee after all,,,

reminds me of a holiday i went on few years back, i went to busso for a week, and my girlfriends brother was moving house and getting rid of some pet fish he had, she thought it would be ok to just put them in my aquarium, came home to a nice tank full of water and rock. :( apparently his fish and my fish were from opposite tribes..

don't lie...
you used them as live bait on the Swan for cobbler and flatties....lol

not joking, but a friend of mine on the east coast goes to the pet shop for those bright orange goldfish, buys them at a dollar each and says they the best live bait ever for flatties and local fresh water Cod!!!
