had the ''happy moment ''today out of coast while fishing ,brought up a rather large orange model and being a bit careless I got hit on the right hand while dehooking the bugger boatside .....
needless to say it was hell firey painfull , had forgotten how they make you yip , right hand puffed up and the pain was intense for an hour or so , then hit it with 4 Panadol and a bucket of hot water ........,,pretty good now , but thought id post up just to remind peoples ..
be careful with the buggers ..we had 4 come up today ..., it only takes one !!1
didn't ruin the day , as we had 14 good siz crays and was 1 demersal short of a bag , but it is to be avoided if you can !!!lol

Oh yeah. Saw my cousin battle for hours with what ended up being around a 1 inch spine broken off in his thumb. Prick still outfished me!

Heard similiar and worse
Which means I have a set of extra long nose pliers and take alot of care getting gurnets off the hook, happy to hear it didnt totally ruin your day out, conditions would have been pretty good by the looks of it.

You seem to have got a good
You seem to have got a good haul any way. They are a prick when you catch em on the yak. Ive never been unlucky enough to get stung but out of curiosity do the spikes actually have to break the skin for them to sting or is it a matter of just getting scraped and the slime does the damage? I'll still keep em at arms length of fallin in the yak.

Dehooking gun
A great investment in avoiding those spines and far easier than long nosed pliers

A mate
of mine got spiked recently. He said "All Good" . I told him that in 5 minutes the pain was going to hit 8/10 and stay there for an hour. At least i warned him, It wasn't nice watching the poor bugger. They are nasty bastards for sure.

Caught one fishing the beach
Caught one fishing the beach in freo, thought we’d keep it as I’d heard they were good eating, was really careful about the dorsal spines forgot about the the ones on its anal fins, way the pain builds is impressive but my heart rate started going through the roof, so hospital it was!

Vinegar is for jellyfish
Vinegar is for jellyfish stings.... pee does very little to help anything. Fish spikes is hot water as you can stand and the pain goes away, you need to keep it in hot water for several hours.

Speaking of, whats the difference between a Lentil and a Chic pea?

tim , lol ... no way to check
tim , lol ... no way to check that out today as only had a mate onboard ...I can say chick peas are good in tuna salad though !!!
I found the 4 panadol , with a beer helped after about an hour ...then I put my hand in a bucket of hot water when I was able too ...
rule on my boat has always been don't bring em onboard ...just de hook , and release ... less problems usually lol ,,,

They do hurt. Are you sure
They do hurt. Are you sure you were one demersal short? You know gurnards are classed as a demersal

Gurnard demersal or not?
You raise an interesting point about Big Headed Gurnard being classified as a demersal. I sought clarification from Fisheries Dept on that point last year. If you refer to the WA Recreational Fishing Identification Guide issued May 2017 it clearly states that Big Headed Gurnard are an Inshore Demersal. On the other hand however the WA Recreational Fishing Guide 2017/2018 makes no reference at all to Big Headed Gurnard. The reply from Fisheries stated that Gurnard are not part of the demersal bag limit and that they fall into the mixed bag limit category. Yes it's confusing!!

Know a few spike victims
Got done with a flathead, hurt a bit and rubbed the belly on it. Don't reckon it did much, if anything although told it is a pain reverser. Mate stood on a dead gurnard washed up and well-decomposed and pissed in a bucket and reckons it did sweet FA. Heard people get popped by various stingy things and i have heard various claims to success and failure. Deep down i feel if ya piss wont rid ya tinea you were told to piss on then its got less chance of working hehe. Otherwise try whatever and fingers crossed !
Does anyone know if it is a similar type of venom between most fish or do venomous species all have unique unrelated venom ?

Heat is supposed to break
Heat is supposed to break the venom down so Hezzys bucket of hot water is the rigjht idea but needs to happen as early as possible.

what we do now to avoid the
what we do now to avoid the fish jumping too much is put the bugger in the net then remove the hook. limited space limits its chance of moving.

We catch quite a few but I try and keep them at arms length, particularly since I heard the story of a local guy who begged medical staff to cut his arm off after a good spiking, ouch

Brother copped one
Had to bring my brother in from around 24kms out after getting stung in the hand. He was on the floor of the boat and at one stage.I thought he had carked it.
We had his missus meet us at the boat ramp with some HOT water and that provided instant releif from the pain.
I always figured he deserved that one because earlier that trip he held a Mutton bird up behind my head as a joke and when i turned around it latched onto my lip!!!
Yes I did offer to piss on his sting and YES I would have accidently pissed on his head given the chance

Cut then off
All nasty spikey things including sea snakes get cut off while still in the water alongside the boat, I'ld rather replace a rig than get stung by any more fish. They all hurt like bloody hell.
