Herring & Tailor in the swan

Hi everyone, Going to take a mate who doesn't do much fishing out on the swan on Sunday morning. Hoping to drop the crab pots and then try for some herring or tailor - where's my best bet? Heard there were pleanty of choppers around the narrows a while ago - are they still about? Would be good fun to try and troll for them, any other lure suggestions besides twisty's? And the hezza's..  read in the paper tht there are a few about in the swan but haven't caught them there yet - where is a good spot to try? Any help would be much appriciated!

Scottland - thanks for the tip mate, who make this lure and will blue water stock it? Sorry I know bugger all about lure fishing but a bit of trolling sounds like fun.

When I was young fella I used to fish off the yacht club jetties in the lower swan (east freo area) in summertime. Little maribou jigs bounced along the bottom in the pens used to account for flatties and flounder.

Bull herring used to hang in the shade under the boats, often hitting the jigs on the drop. Average size was around 30cm, good fat fish.

I imagine they are still there but its probably harder to access the yacht clubs now. I did fish it out of a tinnie later on but the best fishing was off the jetties themselves, right amongst the structure.

Before the world went crazy with fancy bream lures and all things jigging, the maribou jig was one of the top lures for small fish.

Basically a small round head (sinker) attached to a hook. The tail was feathers bound to the back of the jig head. When you flicked the jig in the water the feathers used to pulse, bringing this simple lure alive.

Colours available included white, yellow, red, lime green and maybe a few others. Hooks were pretty soft so they could only be fished on light gear and the jig tail was usually gone after one good session. Cheap but effective.

That look likes like bucktail on the tail. The maribou feathers were the soft down feathers that really pulsed.

Anything similar would work but you need really light heads so they dont plummet on the drop.

Small saltwater flies with lead eyes could be good.

Just google 'maribou jigs', plenty of images there. Some look pretty fancy these days.

Also known as 'crappy jigs'.
