Help - Fishing from Dawesville
Submitted by wazzbat on Thu, 2010-02-04 01:49
Can anyone please help out with any advice on how to catch a decnt fish (ie. dhuie, snapper, baldie, KG etc) out from the Dawesville channel. I'm not after anyones spots, just some general advice on depths, directions, rigs, bait etc. Anything would be helpful because we aren't having much luck. We've had one KG in about 5 trips out and the rest is wrasse and rock cods. It's a bit frustrating but we keep trying cause we love being out there.
Cheers

Long drifts over the 30m contour line should see some dhuies, specially further south.

We were about 20nm south west in about 35m water last time we were out and stumbled across some good bites and a baby pinky but other than that - Nada! We might try and get back out there? Thanks for your help!

There were plenty of
There were plenty of Southern Bluefin Tunas out there for the last few weeks. Not far out either....about 8-10nm out to just before the first bank. Motor out there, look out for working birds, drive over there and put the lures out about 100m before the school. Troll around them or pass them and should pick a fair few.

Always the way... Took the
Always the way... Took the lures today but saw no action.
Thanks for your replies guys. Gave us some ideas and most of all confidence we might actually get something.
We got out there at about 6am but the chop was a bit much for our boat so we stayed in fairly close. Tested out the new rod/reel against a big ray. It was about 2 meters in diameter! Took me a little over 15 mins but was a bit of fun. After a little while the wind dopped a bit and we putted out to about 30m (slow going). Straight away the fish were biting. Unfortunately not too many of them were keepers.
We ended up moving around a bit around the 30m mark which put us about 11 mile from the Cut entrance. All up we caught 4 Breaksea Cod, 4 Pinkies, 1 Queeny, 1 Red Snapper, 1 Skippy and some seargent bakers, gurnetts, wrasse and rock cods. The keepers were 1 Pinky (just sized), 1 Breaksea (just sized), 1 Skippy and 1 Queeny. All the other fish went back succesfully apart from the seargents (good bait).
It was a good day for our standards. We were kept busy (and optimistic) all day with some nice bites and bust offs. Looking forward to getting out again soon.
Saw you at the Jetty on the way out Mik. How'd you go today???
