4x4 under 15 000

Depends a bit on what you want to do with it - but if it's for general car duties and a bit of towing (ie- not a HUGE boat) and 4wding I reckon it's pretty hard to go past a 90/95 series prado.  For under 15 000 yo should be able to pick up one with somewhere between 150 / 200 k's on it and will give you years of service.

I have a 98 V6 petrol and reckon it's a beut car.  Does plenty of 4wding, plenty of space without being huge, Mrs loves to drive it (I have auto) and seats 8 people so I always have room for the inevitable visitors or kids friends.  The back seats come out easy too if you want to use the back to put camping gear etc in for a trip (like when we travel to Perth on our yearly relly bash).  The only downside is that the petrol (3.4l v6) is pretty thirsty - not an absolute shocker, but something to be aware of).  A good mate of mine has a 97 model and when it was time to consider replacing it, he instead spent they money on getting it re-sprayed and looking good because it was running so well.

My old man also has a 2001 diesel model.  Great car - if a little down on raw take off grunt etc but runs on the sniff of an oily rag.  He regularly travels with a caravan on the back and a 12 ft tinny on the top and loves the thing.  Did a round aust. trip a couple of years a go and had not a single problem except for struggling a bit towing the van up some mountain range in NSW.

If you wanted something bigger with more towing capacity I'd maybe look at an 80Series cruiser (beware of high k's though) or a patrol (not the poxy 3l diesel)

Get a Landrover Steve

Thu, 2010-12-09 12:39

Step up in class mate Kiss

Mine came in at 15,000 with 180,000Ks. It's TD5 and is great to tour in. All major work has been done with rear suspension, drive shaft etc. 130 litre tank, dual batteries blah blah blah....

Anyway, what's happening? You sick of that POS Cruiser already?

Don't see a lot of Landies in the back blocks of the Kimberley or the NT. Come to think of it, not many in the shopping centre car parks up this way either. LOL

Read BJ comment as sarcasm to how common Landcruisers, not landrovers are up here. Got to learn to read again.

Sherbs is only going to Steep Point LOL. Beside, I wouldn't want my Disco riddled with red dust anyway. You need throw-away vehicles for up there.

Landies are considered one of the best off-roaders around and certainly handle a lot better than some of the other stuff. No messing around with locking hubs (that often don't lock or unlock).

My Landie doesn't belong in shopping centre carparts....It belongs on the beach!!!!!!

Confusion

Thu, 2010-12-09 15:04

I dont even think about Landrovers. IMO not a 4x4 but an expensive City folk Car.

When I say Landie it only means a Landcruiser, so I must be wrong and call them cruisers from now.

Neels

By the way Sherbert, get any Landcruiser or other 4x4 Toyo.

Mile after mile

I'm sure you have Vince, but I'm talking about mile after mile, corrugation after corrugation, rough track after rough track reliability.

I have had a Patrol, Subaru Forrester, Mitsi Pajero

Thu, 2010-12-09 17:28

and finally having moved up to Karratha decided I need the real deal. And having had the various 4x4 for beach fishing at Tim and White Hills, and some landlubbing fishing up here in the North I would rate them for beach, not Dunes like this:

1 Landcruiser

2 Forrester (surprise surprise but never got it bogged when the other 2 to follow have been beach bogged a few times)

3 Patrol

4 Poor Pajero

At the end they will all do a job, but for overall evrything the Cruiser (note this BJ) wins hands down, and mine is the not as popular 200S, and I think the 100S is probably a better overall vehicle.

Neels

When I organised Rally Oz years ago all our support vehicles were Toyo Cruisers, and the teams like Subaru, Puegot, Skoda and even Ford once used Toyata cruisers as their rally support vehicles. Its no guess what Toyota used, and the poor Mitsi team which was once mighty had to settle with their Paj. Poor blighters.

No doubt

Thu, 2010-12-09 19:50

That the LandROVER is a magnicent 4X4 that can get you in to some difficult and remote locations. The problem is its lack of reliabilty may see you not able to get out

Do not buy an old landrover. It will break down and parts are super expensive.

An HZJ 80 or 75 series diesel is as good as you can go, And as much as i hate to say it, the old 4.2 GQ patrols, are they best value you can get.  The ford mavrick is a rebadged GQ and generally cheaper than than a patrol of the same age.

Steve i have a 100 series standard and love it

Thu, 2010-12-09 19:50

But for that money it would be hard to go past a good 80 or a gq patrol. Both tough as and still comfy to drive longer distances.I spoke to a guy today who a mickey mouse short wheel ford maverick(gq patrol) for $8000 fantastic buy for what he got in saying that he has put $3000 into tyre and suspension. That was more choice than anything.I will keep an eye out for you anyhow.Wink

Steve, I'd suggest a GQ

Thu, 2010-12-09 20:08

Steve, I'd suggest a GQ Patrol for under 15k. Last summer, I had a GQ purely for a beach fishing vehicle. For what I paid, it was a superb 4x4.

Look out for the 4.2TD.

patrol

Thu, 2010-12-09 21:41

sherbs as alot of people mentioned above the GQ patrol (wat i have) are pretty tough and value for money.  if you can afford it a GU patrol turbo diesel 4.2l would be better but for that price it may have alot of kays on it $20000 could get a nice one. 80 series cruisers might also suit your price range about the same vintage as the GQ.

Land rovers are good but tere are alot of duds around that could end in heart ache, most other cars are just too small for what you want.  Prado's and 100 series cruisers with the IFS(snow plow) wont like those soft beaches you like to go on.

plus you saw the beach capability of the mighty GQ last weekend.   I should have monster trucked grahams subaru and made a pancake out of it lol
