HDS5

Ive just recently bought a new boat and it has come with a HDS5 sounder and seperate HDS5 GPS.

Just chasing a bit of info on how people have there HDS5 sounders set up. I think it has a 600w tranny.

I took it out off mandurah to test it all out. The whole screen was coming up in blue and red every now and then we would get a solid yellow ball showing and sometimes yellow archs on the bottom.

Is there anyway to clear the screen from the blue and red and clear the pic up? It seemed to be worse when the boat was moving so i thought it might have been from prop wash but was still there when the motor was switched off.

i cant remember the exact settings it was on however i do recall seeing 200khz when i was scrolling through settings.

We where only in about 30m of water. I am going to be in jurien next weekend and will try a few more things but was just wondering if anyone had any tips.

cheers

You more than likely have a dual 200/50 tranny.  USe 50 for under 50m of water

Get the ethernet cable if you dont already and connect your units together, there are other cables that also nee d to be connected and you can use your cursor on your sounder to add pinpoint spots to your GPS as you cruise along.

AS for sounder settings put the mode to shallow water and adjust your colourline to about 72% for a start this should be set up to give you a half decent view.

Then if you want to go further use spliot screen with zoom or bottom lock and customize your range to the bottom 5m of the water column

"use 50 for under 50m of water"

May I suggest that you use 200mkz for when the water depth is shallow 0 - 100m  deep and 50mkz when the water depth is greater than 100m.

I agreed with you megladon

I agreed with you megladon fishing 200 in shallower depths until i read Rigs post. I did a quick google search and found this on the Lowrance site.. And now i'm confused! Maybe i've been running my HDS on the wrong setting all this time??? Perhaps i should be running 50 for the wider angle, always thought 50 was the skinny one.

Cone Angle
A transducer's cone angle determines its coverage area of the underwater world. The wider the cone angle, the greater the area that's covered. We offer a variety of 200 kHz transducers with either a wide (20°) or narrow (12°) cone angle. The 50 kHz transducers come with a 35° cone angle. The dual-frequency transducers come with both a narrow (12°) 200 kHz and a wide (35°) 50 kHz cone angles. And the dual-search transducers come with both a narrow (12°) 200 kHz and a wide (35°) 83 kHz cone angles.

50Khz has better penetration,

50Khz has better penetration, but less detail, so you use it in deeper water.

There is no point using a LF transducer in shallow water.

 In 30 - 50m depths I use

Thu, 2013-03-07 13:18

In 30 - 50m depths I use 200khz with the sensitivity set between 70 and 80% and the colour line within 10% (higher or lower depending on the day) of the sensitivity. Zoom in once or twice when I find some good ground and I can tell the diference between mud/sand, weed, rock, soft and hard coral. Fish don't show up as arches, more like big blobs or a long skinny line.

I'm interested to see what settings everyone else uses.

Don't they run both at once?

In shallow don't you run both at once? 50kHz to give you a wider picture of the bottom and 200kHz to show up the fish which are under the boat.

http://www.airmartechnology.com/uploads/brochures/P66.pdf

Second page gives a pretty good idea of beam width at depths and the improved penetration of the 50kHz beam, but when you look at the 1000W transducers the 50kHz beam widths are much narrower.

Thats just general information - I haven't used the HDS5.

Its an interesting strategy

Its an interesting strategy and it is exploited on better units, but on a 5" you just don't have the screen space to piss around with games like that.

The Furuno FCV-587, even in 200KHz mode, periodically flicks the 50KHz on, and when it sees a fish that is in the 50KHz beam, it puts a depth or size up for it, depending on settings. That way you can see what's in the tighter cone without split-screening 50 and 200KHz.

Manual

Have a read of the manual it talks about which one is for shallow in there.  Unfortunately I am away at the moment and can't check mine, but I thought I was using 50.

Just jumped in the boat and had a look. Yep I am running 200 for shallow
