Koi or goldfish

Tue, 2016-08-23 12:45

I'm no expert mate but i do have both goldfish and koi.

The koi tend to have the head, eyes, mouth more in proportion to the body than those in your pics. They also dont look like any carp that i have seen so therefor i'm going with giant goldfish.

Yeah theyre definately not your ornamental koi found in most fishponds. I thought these were closer to carp. I know goldfish virtually are carp but theyre slightly different. Oh well...looks like ive got some fishing/ridding to do. Most of the ones in the pond are brown/yellow

 Just a piece of bread

Tue, 2016-08-23 19:13

Just a piece of bread squished onto a long shank hook, suspended below a float, i keep the bait as close to the bottom as possible and use a float so that i have some sort of indication as to when theyre on...they hardly take off at the speed of light. I use old bread for burley aswell. The gold ones seem to be especially hard to catch...they seem to be more wary and scatter if u cast near them compared to the brown ones. These things can be tricky to land... a combination of their sheer size and soft mouth structure makes pulling the hook right through their lip a fairly common occurance unfortunately. The fatty in the 2nd pic pulled the hook a foot from the bank in the shallows ontopnof some tree roots, needless to say i ended up wet when i pounced on it lol

So you sow so shall you reap

And here is another example of the head shed at Fisheries and the local councils putting two and two together and coming up with five.

When all the councils and fisheries got all excited about finding a Murray Cod in one of the ornamental ponds around the place there was a thunder clap in the heavens and all councils and fisheries came up with the easy solution, hey lets ban fishing in all the water ways and ponds and whatever and the problem of pest/introduced species of fish will go away.

How is that going to work asks any normal inquisitive person, back comes the answer well if no one is allowed to fish in these water ways then no one can say that these pests are in the water ways because it's illegal to fish for them so all will be kept quiet from the public. Now that's a good idea...not.

If people where allowed to fish in the ponds/lakes etc for these pests and a condition put on the fishing for them that they are not to be released but humanely killed (just like that for the redfin perch) the fishing public and the councils and fisheries have a win win situation.

As a bright eyed bushy tailed youngster I spent many hours catching very big carp from the Butlers Swamp AKA Lake Claremont now, and I don't recall anyone drowning or losing their life whilst doing this activity.

My council (city) has employed a "pest control officer" at what cost I don't know to go around and try to reduce the number of carp in the ponds/lakes etc in their area of responsibility, when asked why can't the public fish for these pests the answer came back the cretin public would destroy the banks people could fall in and then the council could be sued, and whoa be tired you if we catch you fishing in any of them now be gone you low life rate payer.

We, the council, will let developers put in these nice pretty looking ponds/lakes and the green soft hearted public will release their nice carp/goldfish into them so he/she can swim free, it's just like freeing willie. A golden excuse the pun opportunity for encouraging people into the area is lost.

Rant over

Maybe a petition is in order

Tue, 2016-08-23 19:18

Maybe a petition is in order to be able to fish these nuisance fish? Ill be doing my best to get these buggers out of the pond...its a good way to spend a lazy sunday arvo and im sure the lawn and veggie patch will appreciate it!...unless theyre golden, in which case they "must" go in the pond

Golden carp

Wed, 2016-08-24 07:27

Are just a variation on the carp colouration. We used to fish for them as kids in various freshwater bodies around Sydney. Gold were obviously the most prized, and the least common--you also had black variations, and combinations. Sometimes they would even be a really pale gold pattern on an otherwise normal carp. We would transport them home to aquariums, the best of which would be an old bathtub in the backyard, in shade, complete with water lilies. Or those old concrete laundry tubs were good, too.

Don't know where your getting your info from mate but European carp and goldfish are different species, both from the carp family tho, your statement is like saying a finger mark bream ( golden snapper ) is just a colour variation of a mangrove jack, same family but different species
