freshwater cobbler

Bonjour

Just been shopping and saw freshwater cobbler in the fish counter.  Unfortunately it was battered so unsure of what it really looks like.  Bought some and ate it, tasted good.  Just wondered if it comes from your neck of the woods and if it is similar to the saltwater variety of cobbler that you have?

Cheers fellas

I think freshwater Cobbler

are the same as Silver Cobbler which apparently come from Lake Argyle. We used to catch freshwater Catfish in a lot of the rivers in the Pilbara - never tried eating them though. Sea catfish taste fine - don't know about the big ones up in the Kimberley which can be huge.

Silver Cobbler

They are professionally fished for and harvested from Lake Argyle, are indeed freshwater catfish but have been deliberately renamed silver cobbler or freshwater cobbler to avoid public perception of "catfish" which is very negative from a sales perspective.

A rose by any other name ?   Still they are OK on the chew

Fished for and caught Cobbler in the Preston River near Boyanup many years ago and we battered and deep fried the fillets good chew'n. We used Garden Worms for bait, bloody easy to catch.

Hey Big Kev a couple of questions about them...

-how do they fight?

-how big were the big ones?

- and how do they attack the bait, do they bite it or do they run with it because i heard they run with it....

1 thing that many may or may not know is that fresh water cobler get sold under another name , it may turn a few people off from eating it but i can assure you it is a very popular fish throughout australia and the world for that matter. the name is Basa. have a look on google and type in basa and see what comes up
