150lb multistrand will be good, either make one hell of a trace or a shorter length and run a wind on leader, big hook and a fish frame and just wait it won't take long...

Bundegi Jetty

Thu, 2011-09-22 16:14

The Bundgei Jetty (i'm pretty sure that the name) is a good place for Bities... fished the jetty at night on my first trip to exxy about 5 years ago and picked up a few sharks from there... fresh squid under a float did the damage on a wire trace. its a good spot when the wind is blowing hard from the west as it'll blow your bait out into the gulf.

I only got bitten off once with 200lb so that should be enough. Long heavy mono leader mate, so much reef to bust you on. I did ok near the navy pier

I would be joining the braid

Thu, 2011-09-22 22:47

I would be joining the braid to like 6m of 150lb mono. Plenty of options, albright is probably the simple option and wind-ons the best imo with plenty in between. Then attach the rig to the mono.  Hope your reel n rod is up to running 80lb though mate.

Mate wont be hard to get a

Mate wont be hard to get a shark up there. Few years ago me and a mate were down the bottom of the gulf and 'stayed over' on one of the islands over night. With my ozfex and alvey with 15 kg mono and a trev we caught during the day, all that was required was a suitable hook, some wire and 'lob the bait into the water, seriously 15 feet from the waters edge and within a few minutes a dorsal fin would be spotted and off went the reel. The longer the rod the better, more leverage and a beach sand game chair with a couple of jimmy cans in the belly and its man vs shark. Great fun, bigger the bait, bigger the shark I reckon.

Balloons, and lots of line.

Thu, 2011-09-22 22:59

My standard seup if I want a bit of fun with sharks is my O/H boat rod with over 600m of 30lb, 100lb wire, big hook, big bait (anything fresh, fillets, whole squid, small fish) hook up balloons about 2-3m up the line and float it out as far as you please. Have landed plenty reefies with this around 2m with this and my PB last week with a tiger at about 2.5m north of Coral Bay. Most the reef sharks seem to just have one big run then your pulling in dead weight. But the tiger went for plenty of runs and took me over 2 hours to land. we have been getting strong S/E at night lately so this should work off the Cape.

Mate id probly invest in some

Fri, 2011-09-23 11:33

Mate id probly invest in some concrete boots, just because 80lb braid, locked up drags and 16yr old kids dont mix too well haha. Nah just make sure u back your drag off a fair bit at the start and adjust accordingly. I dont know what reel your using but if its got a tight sticky jerky drag then it mite just be enought to pull you over if youve got your guard down. I also remember someone posting an exmouth lb shark trip report a year or so ago on here, they were fishing around where you wana fish and had a bit of info on what gear they were using, have a search and see if you can find it. Goodluck mate

Just hit the search button on

Fri, 2011-09-23 11:47

Just hit the search button on the top left hand corner of the page (just under the fishwrecked logo and in about the center of it), then type in "exmouth landbased shark fishing" or something along those lines and a few different post should come up. Have a read through them and that should give you a great idea of what your up against. Also if ur running 80lb on a cheap rod and reel then just take it easy at the start and dont lock the drag up or you may end up intears. The other option is a big ass handline and some good gloves and play tug of war with them! Just dont wrap the line around your hand!!!

On a $50 rod/reel combo, I'm

Fri, 2011-09-23 13:00

On a $50 rod/reel combo, I'm betting that the thing melts on the first run if you try putting on anywhere near enough drag to work 80lb line!

Should be fun, but will leave a bitey cruising around with half a spool hanging out of him

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.
