down south fly help

hey guys, over crissy I'll be heading down to perth and over to port piri in SA, i'm only tacking a fly rod so was wondering if anyone can tell me some flies i will need, to have a go at a few flatties in perth, or maybe even a bream. And can anyone point me in the direction of a few spots around the port piri area as i have never been there before. also if there is any fly anglers that want to join me for an early morning walk in the swan close to the end of the year, that would be fun. Cheers guys

Might help to add that you are from up here in Karratha and dont know a thing about flying in the south.

Crazy Charlies with a sinking wt forward flyline and a sinking (ie not fluorocarbon) leader and tippet (the bite tippet can be fluoroC as it often floats the fly up just a little but you dont need these as toothy critters are rare and flatties have rasping mouths rather than teeth). Also if there is herring and tailor choppers around they just cant resist a CC fly but then you will need a bite tippet for Tailor, and upgrade the fly to a clouser. Sardine colour blue and white best.

Funny thing is I have fly fished more down there than up here. Just cant resist the bottom bashing with whatever!!

Flatties in the Swan are fun. Strip and then pause, let the fly sink a little (often the strike comes then) and then repeat. Fan your cast out in a arch so you cover 360 degress around you and then move on if no joy to a new area and repeat the process. Flounder also fall for this and are just yum.

No expert but hope this helps. I was from mandurah and there for some reason is little or no flatties in the Peel-Harvey, but plenty of herring under the big bridge on the inland southern site, aswell as tailor and salmon trout.

Just walk the flats and arch the cast. Bloody flatties will not resist a CC going past. No point in recasting to the same spot. If they are not there move on.

Do you land base up here in Karratha or from boats. I am no expert by any stretch but just love getting something on a fly rod. Love the bend and the fight!

Cheers

Port Pirie is home to massive bream, there's lots of mangrove creeks around there and it's where a lot of SA's biggest fish are caught. I'd be taking a spin rod there myself if I was you and trying to get access to a tinny. Also good yellowfin whiting on the flats around town and great snapper if you can get on a charter (Pirie is straight across the Gulf from Whyalla and just as close to the major snapper grounds).

Pt. Broughton

If you are going to have access to a vehicle, you can go north to Pt Germein where the jetty is 2nd longest in SA. Whiting, flathead, and some snapper have been caught from the end. South to Pt Broughton, monster KG's in the bay. Lucky Tim is spot on about Whyalla 15nm across the gulf to Pt Lowly. On the way through I would also enquire about a charter in Pt Augusta, very awesome YTK around the power stations. Crabs will also be about in abundance. Have a good trip. Saddles
