Dhuies wont play ball!

Hi All
Headed out from point peron yesterday (monday) with a mate
hoping to catch a dhuie on some new ground we had found
in around 28 meters. Did a few drifts and we caught
Harlis, Black Bums, Sargent Bakers, Whiting,Skippy, Snapper but no Dhuies!
The black bums and skippy loved the soft plastics. My mate also caught a
big KG,Harli and a pike on the sp's.
Was a great day weather and fish wise and great to be out on the water.
We seem to find the right type of ground but never pick up dhuies.
Are we in too shallower water? Any advise or tips?

You know when I went out
You know when I went out yesterday I had a dropshot-rigged 7' jerk shad in some orange colour. Nothing touched it, not a thing all day. We also had an okta jig out, and that got a couple of taps, but nothing serious.

We used blue and white sp's and they didnt do to well, so
we changed to white ones and white patterned ones and they went nuts on them.

YOu should see them on the sounder
Check out goats picks, we saw the same thing yesterday and each time, bang, up came a dhuie if we had a bait in the water. They were very shy yesterday though for some reason (I suspect the drift was a bit fast and the swell a little large so baits were no acting really natural)

Drift
The water was strange yesterday, wind blowing one way and current and swell another way. Lines were going all over the place. Plenty of fish on the sounder just no dhuies.

I did have the pleasure of getting spooled
I use the term lightly. Thought for a bit of fun we would come back in behind the reef and burley up with the left over mulies, had a unweighted squid in the trail and whatever took it emptied a saltiga 4500 full of 50lb in about 30 seconds. I could not move the drag and this thing took it like a tuna hooked on bream gear. My bet is a XOS Kingie or a possibly a Random late season TUNA. Never had anything on that size or power before. I will not make that mistake again, and will have the stella 20000 with 80lb ready to go. That was twice yesterday, I know the first one was a big kingie on a baitcaster as I was targeting them, but the second one blew me badly.

can't catch dhuie
Nothing like occie on the line, I'd get murdered if I bought plastic jigs etc on boat, fresh bait fellas, plus depending on the moon, dhuie's swim in close then go deep, think you're a bit shallow round 40 meteres + might be a female but have been taught well, plus you have to let a dhuie suck, feel them sucking give them a bit of line, let them suck abit more then wamo, reel in gently with reef masters and you've got dhuie on board, well hopefully.

Can you really see a difference between Dhuies on the sounder
I spell it with a capital cause I am a Duie virgin too - cant catch the buggers..what difference can you see from normal fish??

If you've got a furuno sounder & frquency is at 200 kilaherts, if you've got a decent sounder the most important thing is look for ground, flat coral with a little drop in or pinnacles, like caves or trenches on edge of reefs, strong tides they'll just sit there go over for another drift might pick one up, depth also factor, certain times of the year you'll get them in shallow, I (hubbie I'm typing this for him) like to fish about 80 metres plus, depending on tide running. Some sounders will show air bladders and some will show the same but could be seaweed with the air sacks in them Japs use the 200 kilaherts for shark fishing as they don't have air bladders, just body mass, so thats what re-acts back to your sounder, depends also on your sounder what deep its good for mine is good for 300 metres, which is peak for fishing at 150 metres .. good luck from hubbie, hope it helps

We tend to catch more dhuies
We tend to catch more dhuies in 36+ m of water, and shallower seem to pick up blackarse, snapper and the odd dhufish. Dalmatinac did well in as shallow as 25m not long ago.

As Bill said, 40-55 metres.....thats the depth I fish out that way!

we have had
boats for 4 years now .we have only caught about 20 in that time .so when they do arrive its fantastic ,red snapper and b/ass still beat the dhu for taste imo.but each to their own

How far out is 45-50 m of
How far out is 45-50 m of water?
Would it be too far to do it Safely in a 4.45m tinnie?
Is it really a matter of picking the days and head out and back as quick as possible?
Or wait until there is a deckie spot available and hitch a ride?

Neander, i went to 40 meters
Neander, i went to 40 meters 2 weeks back and it was 25kms from rocko. I have a 5 meter center console and it was ok, just have to pick your days.

Yeh!
Yeh a 4.45 on a good day is worth the run out. Approx 12NM (as mentioned) for the 40-45m stuff but if you sound around theres good dhu grounds starting from the 10NM. Just a matter of finding the lumps as theres alot of flat ground in between!

throw the plastic away use a 10 o big bait gamy hook.put as much mullet n squid on as u can .use 500mm leader150pound . 100 pound snaps like whitting gear when the dhuies hit hard
