Dhuie Rigs?

Hi guys, I'm curious as to what type of rig, style and hook size you guys use to target Dhufish. Many years ago we used 100lb handlines padenosta rig with 7/0 8/0 hooks in suicide pattern. Now I still use the dropper rig but use smaller 4/0 5/0 Big Red hooks. Does anyone still use huge hooks or a different style of rig?

Cheers Kev.

Firetail Jigs

Sun, 2008-04-20 09:46

I have an old firetail jig that accounted for a few dhuis when back up in Perth. I placed it on the bottom of my patanoster rig instead of a snapper sinker, often loading the hook up with a juicy morcel like fresh squid. Then, of course, there's also lumo squids on one of the droppers which have also been successful. I had my patanoster set up with a top 5/0 or 6/0 for pickers, a 7/0 - 9/0 with lumo lower, and a firetail at the bottom as mentioned. I tend to use Gammy's as well.

Drift (Free) Bait

Then of course, if conditions and depth etc allow it, the old story of an unencumbered bait being the undoing of many a whiley large fish still holds true.

Jigs

Good idea Colin, but I end up with them snagged on the bottom everytime.

Any way to prevent this besides concentration (not my strong point)

I do whatever the little voices tell me to do

Jody, I haven't had too many probs with snagging, depending on the bottom structure, as they tope eye and hook is set with the bite (bend) off the bottom.

Fresh baits , like real

Sun, 2008-04-20 12:12

Fresh baits , like real squid , skun occy , whole or butterflied yellow tail , herring or scalies , sargeant baker or red wrasse strip baits , small squid with a whole pilchard stuffed inside them and also left over king prawns from feed , mounted on a 12'0 tuna circle make a great start . Thing is with sinker weight if you aren't holding bottom your not going to be where the fish are so adjusting the sinker  takes a few guesses but also try to fish the lightest sinker you can to hold bottom . I use a two hook patternoster rig on 80ld jinkai or plane old mono , running two shogun 4406 crane three way swivels with 700mill gap between the two swivels and leader for the hooks running of the cranes at about 300 mill and about 500 mill from the last crane to a loop so i can change out the sinker if it doesn't hold . I like the tuna circles because it just about gurantees a side of the mouth hook in and incase you have to let your line go slack with a fish on say to untangle a sea anchor you have the safety with the circles that the fish will stay on where i found using a normal say gamagatsu occy hook you had to keep the tension on or you lost the fish due to a poor hook up . I have a few spots which are completely baren of any fishy looking features but still manage a fish from them so finding ground is a hard thing , hope that helped out
