Couple of Days Fishing in the SW

With the great weather we have had in the past couple of days it was decided to make the most of it. Met up with Lamby out wide on Wednesday and went in the search of a few dhuies. The day started pretty slow with a couple of spots showing good fish but no takers. After searching around for a few hours Matt who was on Lamby's boat managed a to pick up a nice dhuie on a Fanky metal. After a couple more hours of not much Lamby decided to make his way home and we went and tried a few more spots further west. Finally found a few fish that were hungry. Dave and I both managed to hook up onto good fish. I got busted off and Dave boated a nice dhuie which was caught on a McArthy 7".

After a couple more drifts with no luck it was decied to head for home and try a sambo spot on the way. The sambo spot looked very fishy on the sounder but the fish were on the bottom which was strange. Dave decided to send a FCL Labo down and worked it slowly and I sent down a Sea Rocks knife jig and worked it fast. Dave hooked up and got busted off not long after on a good fish. We were both thinking a sambo but next drop proved us wrong. Dave hooked up again and after a good fight pulled in a dhuie. Managed to catch a couple more dhuies before we headed for home. Looks like my sambo spot had been overtaken by dhuies. Can't complain with that.

Day two we decided to head back to where we found the dhuys the day before. Tried a few old spots on the way out and scored a nice pinkie on the old fav 7" McArthy red mullet.

Arrived at the 'sambo' spot to find it looking very fishy again. Dave hooked up first and pulled in a dhuie, meanwhile I had hooked up to something very solid. After trying to get this fish off the bottom for quite some time we were both starting to think I had hooked a sambo. After a few more minutes it started to come off  the bottom, but every now and then did some blistering runs. After a nervous battle it slowly started to drift away from the boat and we both knew then it was a dhuie. Sure enough it was and a cracking fish too. A new PB for me of 18.5kgs. Was caught on a McArthy 7" pink/pearl using 20lb line on a Posiedon Spin Jerker PSPJ603L and a Certate 3000.

After catching and releasing a few more dhuies of various sizes we decided to try find a few sambos. Headed south to a ledge that goes from 25m to 40m. Sure enough the sambos and ambers were there harassing the baitfish. The next couple of hours were spent stretching the arms and back on some average size fish.

After both of us were beat we headed home to clean the two days efforts of fish. Ended up with 18kg of fillets for the two days. Got to be happy with that.

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.
