Cold Cockburn nights
Submitted by Ben Derecki on Wed, 2009-07-29 16:31
I realise this topic is full of closely guarded secrets but I'm hoping people might be willing to pass on a few basic tips. If there's silence I understand why
.
I'm looking at starting to fish Cockburn Sound at night a bit more, from the research I've done there's some pretty exciting fishing to be had if you can handle the cold. Just wondering if anyone can pass me on any tips about this type of fishing. Types of ground to look for, particular features to fish (drop-offs, gutters etc), areas / depths to fish etc.
Happy for PMs if preferred.
Thanks in advance.

Yeah I'm a boat mate. Have
Yeah I'm a boat mate.
Have had a search through the forums but didn't come across a load of info. Having said that the keywords I used to search probably weren't broad enough. Will have another go later tonight.
Those yaks are deadly. Damn hard to when they're only sporting a small stern light about 30cm off the surface of the water. Thanks for the info and kicking the post off.

Try driving around and
Try driving around and getting close to other boats and hitting the man over board button and getting the GPS numbers? I know it's probly frowned on, but it's one way to find stuff. D9 used to have boats all over it so that shouldn't be too hard to find.
Cheers

no no no no no
do not do this.
frowned upon is an understatement. if you start pinging other peoples spots, you are an official c-nt.
if you do it to me, being frowned upon is the last of your worries.

Not something I'd do Barney,
Not something I'd do Barney, it was only a last resort suggestion. I've certainly had it done to me a couple of times. I just tell them, if they want the numbers, then just ask. I dont keep secrets.

best tip
Take a thermos - 2 is better. A hot coffee/tea/milo is absolute heaven in the cold.
As for the types of grounds - no different to daylight in my experience.

Few pointers. Burely is one.
Few pointers.
Burely is one. Steady stream of mulie cubes out the back quite often attacts pinky's, skippy, tailor, snook.
Good place to try is the ledges along the shipping channels. But remember no anchoring in the channels.
Depending ont he weather you could also venture out onto 5 fatham behind garden island. Pinkys are often common at night on pumps on the bank, which isnt very far behind GI. again Burely is the key.
Dont fish too feavy and dont fish with wire, pinkys will feel wire straight away and more often than not spit it out.
Just keep at it mate, best way to learn is trial and error, once you find some spots holding fish, things become alot easier.
To give you a little bit of motivation, a friend of mine went out over the weekend at night, he caught some fresh squid just before sun down and used them for drift baiting for snapper in the sound.
they got their boat limit within 2 hours after dark. :)

Try and get a copy of the Fishing WA episode
Where Ryan takes Steve Correia fishing for snapper in the sound. Ryan provides some great information in that episode.

@Huggy - got the thermos ready to go mate
@Bodi - great tips, thanks for the pointers. We fished about 50m away from the channel a little while back and a ship came through. Geez, 50m felt like a reasonable distance until the ship started getting close, they look twice the size when they're heading towards you. Didn't feel comfortable until it was past us.
@Colin - I've had have had a good look at that show thanks mate, I think that was probably one of the best FWA seasons... Season 4?

Just be aware of the big
Just be aware of the big bities in the Sound if you are in a smallish boat,,a 4 meter shark circled a boat yesterday off Woodys,,kayak fisherman Albee Mangles had a big critter(unseen) grab his Snapper the night before(possibly the same shark?)late last season White pointers,Whalers you name it were pinching folks snapps from the back of their boats, mainly between Carnac and Garden but in closer off Naval base also,,FW member Daniel Westerburn got some piccys off of a 5 meter + unidenfied shark as well,,fish safe,,cheers,,,
