Casting soft plastics form the beach
Submitted by pembo6 on Wed, 2011-09-07 15:51
I am wanting to try out some Soft Plastics from the beach for Tailor, herring, Salmon etc. Before I go out and spend a fortune on jigheads, can anyone share their experiences of this kind of fishing???
I am looking at using 4 to 5 inch plastics (berkley, atomic etc). What weight jighead would you reccomend from the beach? I guess it needs to be large enough to get casting distance (for fish like tailor) but not so heavy that it destroys the action of the plastic.
Is half oz heavy enough? Too heavy?
Any advice from you experience would be great. Thanks

I've fished 1/4oz on a bream
I've fished 1/4oz on a bream rod when the beach was completely flat for herring :p
You can run them off an unweighted hook on a paternoster as well btw. Apart from that have never really used plastics from the beach (prefer heavy better casting lures).

Yeah depends on the gear you
Yeah depends on the gear you are using. With bream gear (~2-4kg rod, 6/8lb braid) 1/4oz should be enough for casting 3 or 4 inch minnows if theres no win. Otherwise maybe go 3/8oz.
With slightly heavier gear for tailors/salmon etc I usually use a 3/8oz as a min off the beach. 1/2oz is pretty good for 4 or 5inch placcies. As long as you've got a decent graphite rod and braid you should be ok.
In saying that I too prefer heavier lures (Slices, stickbaits and poppers) for beach fishing.

Thanks guys. I normally use
Thanks guys. I normally use metals and poppers, but was wanting to try something new.
The rod I will be using is a 7ft graphite rated 3-6kg. Using 4000 size reel with 6kg braid. But may need to downsize to my 2500 reel with 3kg braid.
Will mainly be using 5 inch plastics so will try some 1/2 oz jigheads.

That combo should be fine
That combo should be fine for 1/2oz jigheads and 4 or 5 inch placcies mate. Just as long as the swell and wind isn't up to much.
