I can see myself going through a shizenload of those if I was jigging for demersals. Especially in that snaggy/corally country. Considering they're probably $50 jigs, I'll stick to bait thanks. :)

Very easy to make a home made version. 12 ounce lead, eye in both ends of it, spray paint it, attach snelled hooks with pretty skirts and beads.

Looks like a trolling chrome head turned into a jigging outfit.

Nah Deano you wont find them in any shops in Oz.....but its also not something new from Japan, just something they brought back in a more modern design, like the Sambo jigs......

Dont rush ahead of yourself Deano.....when you catch a 24.1kg Dhuie on a jig then you can try something more challenging....hehe....

Anyway I can't catch a 4kg dhuie on a jig nevermind 24kg!  Best I've had is 40cm pinkie and lots of wrasse/foxfish which were all fowl hooked...  Gotta try something new

I just had an attempt at making one, and it was harder than it looked but got there, will post a pic soon.

There is a size 8 gamakatsu octopus hook on the jig, Was also thinking about the lead wearing down, but not a real easy way of fixing that other than chopping off the top and making a new hole after a while.

As this cats well and truly out of the bag I might as well come clean give you guys some pointers.

I first saw these on a Japanese language site a few years back and immediately set-to making a few 'experimentals'.
They are so simple to make I don't know why anyone would part with hard earned $ for them.

To really catch you MUST fish them just off the bottom and slowy-slowly-slowly.
The trick is to match the weight with the drift/current speed to achieve the 1-1.5metre between the jiggy and the bottom.
The VERY best place for me is on the down current side of any reef that has a sandy type bottom.

With PE and 5metre floro leader fish can be felt gripping the thing even before they try and make off with it - really amazing experience.
Very effective when fish need to be coaxed its biting (cold water, over fed, over fished etc).

As for colours use a waterproof pen and a sharp knife and make your own tests.
For the rigging just make sure it damn strong!

As all my best fish of 2007 have all come with these jiggys, what more can I add?

I reckon that a piece of good quality stainless steel wire with a loop both ends, threaded through a piece of 20mm copper pipe squashed down on one end then filled with lead then painted would do the trick for the top end.  Attach a quality leader to the bottom loop, thread a squid lure over it then attach the hooks (single or ganged) and you've got it.

Will have to try that one out as well.
