Broome in may

Hi all, sorry to be a pest!!!

Im flying up to darwin and my mate n i are driving to broome to chase some sails on fly. Ive been looking around the net and there really isnt a great deal of info about the place. We are towing up a 5m boat.

Has anyone else fished Broome in May and if so what have you had success on? I hope we can find trevs, macks and tuna. Im just trying to nut out what to bring, Im not just a fly fisho. We will chase sails until we get a few and then we can target other species. We have 7 days there from May 22nd. Cheers guys

P.s we would love a few Gps marks for some tasty reef species. Please? we will take them too the grave, promise

You might be lucky

Arko,

You might be lucky to get a saily off broome in may. I lived there for 5 years and the years that i chased sails with some mates that still live there, they dont start coming on the chew until late July. A good spot for trevs an macks is Disaster rock which is s/w if the fishing club, tuna you can get anywhere. Fo saily bait we always used small gardies under a skirt.

Hope that helps a little.

Thanks mate, definately head to disaster rock if we can find it.yeah i heard its early for broome, still confident. They are on the chew near Darwin at the Perons but there is a big truck bogged blocking our way to the boat ramp so broome is our only option. Im pumped to have a crack at those big permit, cuda and queenies around willies creek on fly and some macks, trevs and little tuna. Im from Geelong, not much gamefishing there so pinheads or not it will still be awesome, cheers

I saw 2 sails yesterday and there have been a few caught already, very close to town as well. I will be having my first crack at them next saturday! Most people fish for them out from barred creek around 3-7km out but anywhere from cable beach down where there is baitfish is worth a crack. i will prob be off work that week so let us know when you get here

Sails are already here in

Sun, 2011-04-24 08:25

Sails are already here in good numbers. Barred creek will fire for a few months now. Macks are around already so you shouldn't have any problems getting them. Try Bottom bouncing out at grey shoals not far out from Barred creek

D'rock is the go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sun, 2011-05-01 13:55

I have fished broome for the past 3 years and have had some of the most insane days fishing there ever .

check out a web site called marinews.com it gave me all the GPS co-ordinates i needed to some find of the hottest fishing in the world!!!!!

I'm from NSW and have zero local knowledge and we were hitting BIG macks, trout ,cobia, reds and spangled,Queenies and GT's off disaster rock and we got the GPS from MARINEWS.COM.try using halco 190 crazy deep in king brown and chrome pink colours for macks and halco rooster/haymaker poppers and williamson jet poppers for cobia ,Queenies ,trout and GT's. if you catch a tuna slab it up and drift down some big baits for monster cod.

willie creek is good for the late run in tide for really big mangrove jacks around the northern bank. try a whole squid cast it onto the cliff bank when the tide has submerged it by about 2 inches ,let the incoming tide wash it of the cliff bank and HANG ON!

GOLD slice lures work well in the tidal lagoons at willie creek .park the boat and get out your bream gear . the lagoons hold everything from bream to GT's but to finding anything over 3kg is unlikely but you never know, its good fishing while you wait for a turn in the tide ,6 casts 5 fish usually.

for barra head accross the bay to thangoo creek and jacks creek .PICK YOUR TIDE! IT IS VERY EASY TO GET CAUGHT!. you can also get big schools of long tail tuna and golden trevally hanging around the reefy bottom about 1.5 km of echo beach resort  ( about 2km west of thangoo ) and GT's aroung the red rock cliffsjust west of echo beach. BUT WATCH THE TIDE you are a long way from anywhere and the tide runs out about 6 kms .

broome jetty has huge GT's and goliath grouper as well as gigantic schools of Queen fish .

When you are popping for GT's there, cast off the back of the boat and have the driver ready to gun the throttle to keep them off the pilons, lock up your reel and hang on.

Fished barred today very

Sun, 2011-05-01 19:29

Fished barred today very quiet after seeing loads last Monday. No tuna but plenty of macks around, raised one sail 1.5kms off Barred in the morning then had 3 or 4 rounding up bait about 3pm, got 1 and blew the rest. not happy cocking up after a slow day but it all looks good for the next neap. Loads of bait around so should be good in about a month

Sun, 2011-05-01 20:00

You wouldnt happen to know what the tides will be like from 6th to the 20th of june do you billcollecter? I know there will be a neap in there at some stage.

I am terrible at figuring that stuff out, cant read those maps to save myself.

Ta mate.

Mon, 2011-05-02 09:28

Aha! Thats much easier to understand buddy.. cheers.

So what does "not the best neaps" mean for the fishing.. obviously will effect the water clarity and so on but what else?

Also,  is the fishing still ok during the spring tides? Between the 6th and the 20th ill be out on the water for 9 days in three day blocks. Seems like most of the days the variation is around 3-5 mtr, then it blows out a little in the last 3 days of the trip with around 7-8 metre variation.

Sorry about the twenty questions, just trying to get my head around what ill need to do to have a successful trip as Iv been waiting for it for over a year. Any tips and advice will be really appreciated.. cheers!

Tides will be good for most

Mon, 2011-05-02 13:16

Tides will be good for most fish from the 8th - 16th then fish crab creek on the incoming tide and for about 2 hours after top of tide on the spring tide days.Spring tides only have a small window of opetunity for bottom bouncing but plenty of other options with tuna and mackies plentiful.

Great stuff. Thanks heaps. Being Victorians we'll be more than happy chasing mackies and tuna for the last few days.. :) Probably best to comcentrate on the bottom bouncing mid trip then.

Thanks again, appreciate it.
