Braid to Leader to Lure

Read around on the forums, alot of people prefer to tie the leader straight onto the braid using knots, eg albright.

Is there anything wrong with using a swivel in between the braid and leader? Using blood knot or something..

And can you use a swivel clip from the leader to attach the lure or is it better to use a loop knot of some sore?

If you join your leader to mono, and the mono to terminal gear, then you can use a stronger knot than if you tie braid straight onto the terminal gear.

Braid has a lower percentage of retained strength for knots than mono, so better would be to use a pr/fg/mid/gt knot then tie your terminal gear on.

Try the uni instead of the blood knot, its stronger and not a lot harder.

Swivel clips? Best not to ;)

Already decided on using braid as a main line, my reel didn't come with a spare spool either so I'll be stuck with the 4lb braid for a while.

You are referring to my reel when you say terminal gear right? haha

wouldn't the leader go to the terminal gear then..

Oh sorry didn't make myself clear, I am fishing for bream, and wasn't sure if swivel clips onto lures would spook the fish somehow..

Hi Kfish,The idea of a swivel

Mon, 2012-06-25 18:50

Hi Kfish,

The idea of a swivel is to reduce line twist, if you put a swivel between your main line and leader you will not be able to wind your lure up close to the tip when casting and you will reduce your accuracy when casting.

If you shorten the leader you will have the swivel close to the lure which does not do much for natural presentation and gives the braid a place to hang and tangle on

If you are having trouble with line twist a good swivel can help

Use a leader -  the idea of a leader is reduce the chance of break off due to abrasion where the line is worn most by either contact with the bottom/structure or the fish's teeth and gills etc. braid is not as abrasion resistant as nylon in the same breaking strain probably due to the larger diameter of Nylon.

the trick is to use the lightest leader possible and that will be determined by the area you are fishing and type of fish you are targetting - if there is lots of snags and big fish you will need to go heavier if no snags and small fish go lighter leader

heavy swivel clips attached from the leader to the lure can affect the action of a small lure I would look at bill norman speedy clips for quick change connection between leader and lure they come in a few sizes to suit smaller and larger lures or tie a type of loop knot to give the lure freedom and it will not affect the action

Good luck and a good tackle shop should be able to give you plenty of advice for free

When bream fishing i always tie braid to leader to terminal. With the Bimini improved allbright ( even though most will tell you use to use gt/fg which i agree with but dont tie YET with such light line 6lb) Swivel is just one extra thing to get caught on rocks/weed when flats fishing, i never use them.

Ah that would make sense as to why people don't use the swivels..

Looks like I gotto start learning how to tie braid to leader without it breaking as I pull it tight

So will double unit knots hold the 4lb braid to the 6/8/15lb leader well?

I personally would never use it. The Bimini Improved allright or Gt if you want are pretty easy to tie once you get the hang of it.

4 turn surgeons knot as a real quick and easy....not sure about knot strength, will test it tonite against an FG which is what I use. But I may give the surgeons knot a go if busted off on a hot bite, as there is no easier knot ( a quadruple granny.......).

Try a Bimini twist to make a braid double then to attach your leader try a Yucatan knot. I modify mine which is very simple. I pass the leader through the double end from the bottom, twist it around the braid 12 times then pass the tag end of the leader back through the top of the end loop where it first came through from below. Simple. When you start to tighten make sure the leader twists across the Braid and once that starts you can let go of the tag end of the leader and pull the rest tight. It's a great knot and takes less than a minute.
