Boating - Trolling
Heyy alll
have recently got the boat fixed up and tested it today, and no leaks, will be giving it a proper run tomorrow... if all is good we will be trolling between Ocean Reef and Mindare, Possible to hillarys.
THing is i know nothing about trolling, apart from the basics... with SBT and some mackies still around i want to give it a shot! but dont know where to start...
what depth around?
what speed(Km/h)?
what lures?
i have 3 lures that i have found, x2skirts x1 Hardy
the hardy is around 13cm and a mulie pattern blue, make is pretty sure 'Storm'...
the skirts are from south africa; but the dark purlpe pink one is suited for tuna and has a flat head as big as a 5c coin...
the second skirt is a lumo green one, exept its head has holes in it... is it a jet head?
both skirts are around 7-8inches...
Cheers all!

best speed on average would
best speed on average would be around 8knts. from the sounds of it it might be worth a try with all 3 lures. couldnt say what depth as the fish move around a bit. have seen them in 20mtrs and right out to 200. just look for any surface action or birds diving

Keep an eye for the birds
Keep an eye for the birds mate, they should lead you to the baitfish.
Once you find the bait just troll in that area.
Got some nice longtails in the 25 - 30m mark, but that was a bit north. Not sure around here, but i would try off the outer edge of 3 mile.

Might be worth getting a few
Might be worth getting a few deep divers, eg halco or rapala, as Heinz said the back of three mile is where you will fond most of the bait and most of the fish, so between 15-25m is a pretty good depth. I troll at around 6kn but any where between 4 and 10 will work.

i troll at whatever the speed
i troll at whatever the speed the lures swim best at. no good doing 10 knots if the hardbody is skipping on the surface.
If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

if it doesn't seem to work
if it doesn't seem to work Die Hard, change something up and find what works best, change your speed and see what happens, grab some extra hard bodies that run at different depths, for value for money you really can't beat Halco/RMG's in the scorpians and laser pro's, every tackle box should have a Laser Pro 190 in the 2m diver and a scorpian in either the 5m verson or the crazy deep. But if the fish a busting up on the surface, get ahead of the fish and drift then cast 30g twistys into the fray and HANG ON!!! i love casting for tuna on light tackle!
