Black magic

Ive purchased the heavier stuff i hate it.Knots tend not to bed down nicely and its too stiff. Can't go wrong with Jinkai in the heavier stuff.

Jinkai green or red

Wed, 2010-09-01 19:03

Jinkai green or red though?

Green knots well, not sure I'd rate it for abrasion resistance though its nice for trolling.

Probably the stiffest leader I've used lately has been yozuri disappearing pink 60lb fluorocarbon - its like tying knots in fencing wire!

And they advertise it as supple....

Though, to be fair, it probably is compared to other flurocarbons that thick. But certainly not compared to mono. I have some 120lb fluro and you cannot tie it at all (but then why would you want to when you can crimp :p

I suspect that it breaks way

Wed, 2010-09-01 21:22

I suspect that it breaks way over poundage, like most of the yank market stuff.

I need to get some decent crimps one day, Otto took my last lot into the garden =(

I've been using black magic

Wed, 2010-09-01 19:22

I've been using black magic for ages, from 20-100lb, but mainly 40, 60 and 80lb in tough. I rate it highly, ties great knots and tough.
Thumbs up from me.

Used the 120lb for jigging last season, horrible to tie with
went back to Varivas and problem was solved. I do like Jinkai as well though - much cheaper

You girls just can't tie knots properly. Probably tying blood knots in 200lb.

I use supple trace all the time. I like it.

Yep, 20 through to 130 lb

Wed, 2010-09-01 22:06

Yep, 20 through to 130 lb black magic tough has worked OK for me.......as it gets heavier, best terminal knot is the centuri....very reliable and has never slipped on me. Used improved albright and  improved bristol both work well up to 80 lb to join to braid via bimini double.....need to learn funky PR type knot or similar for 130lb.

I quite like the stiff tough trace for doing paternoster twisted droppers, sticks out nicely.

BM hasn't caused me any

BM hasn't caused me any problems yet. Although, I tend to use plastic coated lockweld wire 60-80lb for most things now

you make a good point john f

the stiffer the trace , the less likely the droppers will twist up.

Used both and like both

Jinkai easier to tie, on reef less durable than BM tough. It is the only leaders I use in 20lb up. Use fly fishing leaders for any strenght below 20 (cant remeber the make off the top off my head).

I reach into the leader bag and if it is Jinkai use that, if BM use that. Knots have not been an issue, althought the one who shall be obeyeds knots seem to slip sometimes (he he) because I tie them and she outfishes me!!

Have to admit for dropper loops have found BM better because of the stiffness, but then I suspect less bites. But thats just how i feel. With plackies and jigs use Jinkai preferentially, and have never crimped mono off any type. If you cant tie a decent knot in it, go back and practice some more. In the heavy weights just use less turns, eg for a Uni in 150 you can get away with 2 turns, but I use 3 (just dont trust 2). Below 60lb use 4 and lighties I use 5.

Varivas to expensive unless you are all bling or in a comp.

50 - 80lb BM

with no worries at all.

Beyond that I use 110lb Schneider Klear Line and that stuff is excellent also.
