Today

Saw it tied up on the beach at the ramp this arvo and wondered what had happened.

Think the low winds can trick people into thinking it will be better out there than it is with a 4m+ swell.

At least it sounds like the guy is OK.

When are these idiots going

Sun, 2009-09-13 20:32

When are these idiots going to learn, just because there was very little wind today, and the sun was out, the swell takes at least three days to "die down". I have no sympathy for him, or the other idiot during the week. This clown should lose his RST.I feel sorry for the Local Volunteer Sea Rescue who had to risk their lives and boat to get this boat ashore.

Jim.

Five fathom

Mon, 2009-09-14 11:01

In the sound we could see 5 fathom breaking esspecially north where there was a huge "A" frame rolling through pretty consitatly.

The squid were patchy in the sound but we got a feed.

Hope the fella who got wiped out gets back on his feet and on the water soon.

Learnt his lesson the hard way.

Bliksim, it could happen to anybody!

Mon, 2009-09-14 11:37

Yip! anybody can stuff up, some of us get away with it, and some don't! Give the man a break, Skippers training should include educating and awareness, for new boat owners as to ankering! sea ankers/ bottom ankers, I have seen many anglers get into trouble, due to lack of experience and knowledge. Educate and train people about the dangers of swell's especially when it comes to smallish boats!

Where

Where did it happen?
All the training in the world doesn't stop people doing stupid acts without a second thought for their own or others safety. He will have second thoughts next time considering how lucky he was to survive this time.
Recovering the boat is not a priority of sea rescue, saving life is and anything after that is up to the crew on the day

Carnarvonite, This happened

Mon, 2009-09-14 13:31

Carnarvonite, This happened West of Point Peron ramp Rockingham, that is the Rockingham Sea Rescue boat in photo. I am thinking this would have happened west of the John Ledge Marker, what people forget, is, that it is fairly shallow through there. In fact, it is not unusual to see big swell roll through, especially if going across to Garden Island via the Causeway. Even today, there would have to be at least a 3 M swell running through. Also the west side of that channel, there are a few reefs close by and as you know wave action can be very different close to a reef. I agree Sea Rescue Priority, is to save life, not a Salvage or towing business.

With regards to watching the Forecast what is wrong with watching the Forecast on Channel 10 or on the ABC, I think they give a far better interpretation and if that fails to register, have a look at the sea state. also old saying, If in doubt, Dont go out, it is that simple, No in betweens.

Jim.

Mon, 2009-09-21 21:04

Looks around a 5meter boat???????>with a 4 meter swell as you guys have said. What a donkey he is lucky to be alive a big swell is so much more dangerous than a sloppy choppy sea imo.Lesson learned me thinks shame the volenteer sea rescue had to risk their lives to tow the bloke home

He went out to do a spot of

Mon, 2009-09-21 23:37

He went out to do a spot of surfing off Pt Peron, he said the swell was big but managable, a freak wave hit him and stalled the motor while he was sorting it out,,another wave hit him leaving him dazed, bleeding and confused,,then he noticed the boat was sinking.

He grabbed his surfboard and somehow made it to shore where he was found huddled up on the beach,,he credits the beach goers with saving his life, if they did not come along he would be dead,,, (report from local paper)
