Best fishing presenter?
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Thu, 2009-06-11 22:18
Just thought I'd throw this one out there. Who do you think is the best fishing presenter past and present and why? Is it the way they talk to the viewer, show what you want to see, how they fish? Just interested in who watches what and what they like to see.

agree
Love him or Hate him, the man is fishing, if it wasnt for him and his antics i dont think alot of television would be the same, the man has done alot over the years, and its funny how many young kids know who he is in fishing.
loved his fishing adventures show as a kid, really made me love the sport more, always loved waiting for each sat morning just to watch his show

the 2 dans fishing show is pretty good. (daniel and daniel).
i'll tell you who the worst is - steve correia. the sound of his voice makes me want to slit my wrists.
the new hosts of FWA arent overly good either, witho jacko being the worst of the 2.

Have to say Rex Hunt
think he was the beginning of all the off shoots to fishing shows, Rex was annoying but I loved his style. Hate fishing shows that seem to advertise more on jigs, rods extra than show actual fishing, I know they have sponsors etc but sometimes the advertising seems to be more than the actual fishing segment.

Agree
Have to agree with you Roberta on the shows being a 23 minute advert in a 25 minute show.
The chap who does Fishing Australia and Steve Correia are definitely not in the race.My vote would be a toss up between Rex and Jacko.Having met Steve Starling and Bushy when they did a show at Hamelin Bay my most courageous award would go to Bushy, the man is riddled with arthritis and having seen him battle to put a good showing in front of the camera really opened my eyes up

Like JK as well...
...he's mostly eastern states (although has done a sambo jigging show out here) but his soft plastic tutorials would be useful anywhere, and he really takes the time to actually educate new players, and even some not so new ones! And he DOES plug certain brands but they are quality affordable ones, not the Saltigas/Certates that Butfield is always trying to ram down our throats. To me, high end gear sells itself, and the majority would rather hear the merits of something more within their budget.
There's another show on Foxtel, River to Reef, that again mainly focuses over east but the presenters are very helpful with stuff involving both fishing and boating, and they take the time to go over all techniques from KG's to GT's.
But yeah, Rex was the stick by which they are all measured...I've seen a lot of fishing shows from all over the world and there is no one like him.

As a host I think Rexy is ok
As a host I think Rexy is ok but he craps on when he has a fish on and it takes him an hour to land a fish by the time he has finished talking. The most watchable presenter Ive seen is Ryan. Like Ive said before put Ryan and Nicko together and you would have a winner. As for Jacko that guys is an absolute tool. He nows nothing about fishing and it shows he,s only repeating what he has been told to say. If four X wernt sponsors there is no way he would be a host of anything. Its a shame because FWA was my favourite show hands down now I cant stand to watch it and that pisses me off.

I dont mind the ( IFISH) guys either but they do a bit to much advertising like you guys said. And JK is not bad if you want to learn soft plastics.

IFISH
The IFISH guys are pretty good at the moment but I used to really like Ryan on Fishing WA. Steve kinda annoyed me but at least he had a lot of enthusiasm. As Tapout said I rekon Ryan and Nick would make great hosts together. And yeah Jacko is a tool.

Steve Starling & Bushy as a team for me
Informative and knowledgeable. Always got into good action rather than indulging in the "travel show" stuff that half the time I think was slipped in because other presenters couldn't catch fish.
Elswhere it was a lot of "Woops we have only caught two herring all day...lets do a spiel on the local winery etc." That always pissed me off turning on some supposed fishing shows wanting to watch fishing action and getting a travel show instead. Rex was guilty of that a fair bit in the latter episodes. It must be hard for them as we all know the fish don't bite on cue.
Jeez we are all hard task masters. Just goes to show you can please some of the people all of the time, all of the people some of the time, but you can't please all of the people all of the time.
Cheers

Two Dans fishing show for
Two Dans fishing show for me.
Theres also a guy in New Zealand who caught a 200 pound Tuna on a hand Line on a 4M stabicraft some 200 NM out to sea . In the next episode I saw the same presenter leap out of a helicopter onto a marlin. Not sure if it was a setup or not?
The guys down at Blue sea tackle in Myaree are sick of my mates and I coming in with beers and watching the fishing videos they have on. That's where we saw the guy jump on the marlin.

This a great topic and thanks for bringing it up Adam
Because of personal circumstances (which I won't go into here), I have been watching a lot of foishing shows on Foxtel lately.
And it has occurred to me that there has been a serious drop in standards in fishing presenters, who now seem to be in a competition to see who is the loudest and most annoying.
Here is my list of presenters I have an issue with.
Jacko (Fishing WA) - apparantly Jacko was at an acting school in Queensland when he was picked to do a beer ad and suddenly found fame. I hear he is a decent bloke, but I am afraid he is lost somewhere between a trainee actor and a beer commercial presenter. I think he should stick to beer ads.
Paul Worsteling (iFish) He started off being Rex Hunt's apprentice and then went on to hosting his own show. For some reason he believes that carrying on like an idiot and making stupid jokes and noises is a basic requirement for hosting a fishing show.
Dave Butfield (Hooked on Fishing) He is a want to be Paul Worsteling/Jacko. He is a skinny "westy" who is trying to be cool, and his use of the fake "woohoo" whenever he manages to land a fish really grates on my nerves.
Jason Kennedy (Fishing Trip) Probably the best of the eastern States TV presenters. Does tend to go overboard with his promos for advertisers and his push for soft plastics, but at least he does explain what he is doing and using in an ueasy to understand manner.

I did not mind Ryan and Steve in the early fishing WA. But Jacko, all i can say is WHY !
Most to me now are just people catching fish. They no longer go into any detail on the how, why, where and when.
I watch in the hope to learn somethink, which I believe Steve and Ryan achieved in the early shows of FWA.

IFISH boys are pretty good.
IFISH boys are pretty good. I ike the approach to trying new styles of fish, weather is be plastics, or poppers or lures. Plus they always seem to vary it up.
Rex hunt would top most peoples list as the king of fishing TV, he started it, and lived it.
Ryan was a wicked host too, always good watching someone who get so wrapped up in what they are doing they forget the camera is there and didnt matter weather he was catching bream in the swan, or GT's from mackie islands. The more a presenter enjoys what he is doing, the more the person watching it enjoys it.

and while he is not really a presenter, Malcolm Douglas used to do the odd tv show and also did a couple of full length films -Across The Top was one - really good hardcore outback fishing 20 or more years ago.

I forgot good old Malcolm yes I love his shows throw in a bit of fishing, knowledge of the area (tides etc) bush cooking and how to cook fish (while out in the bush), yes I love Malcolm's documantaries, we need more of Malcolm type doco's fishing, scenery, aboriginal paintings and after a hard day of all the before mentioned cooking your catch. What more could you want to watch.

After reading all this...
...I'm appreciating what a good presenter Ryan was/is! Low key, yet enthusiastic, and very informative. Some guys are right over the top, some are boring, some just don't do anything to educate/entertain the masses, but it was hard NOT to benefit from any of the shows Ryan did.

Grew up watching rex hunt, loved it all!
But a close second for me is Steve Correia. For me he was entertaining, informative as well as an idiot to keep the show entertaining. He has everything in a presenter that was necessary! I have never met him at all but as a fishing presentator I think he did an excellent job.
The A team was def Steve and Ryan, Ryan caught the fish, steve did the entertaining!

TV Fishing Presenter!
Thanks for the comments guys, certainly a very good question Adam!
As a young keen angler growing up i used to watch fishing shows. The issue i had was not alot of rig talk or techniques and i felt i couldnt learn alot.
With my opportunity thanks to Steve Correia, i had an opening to pass on what i saw lacking in modern day fishing shows. That being indepth INFO & TECHNIQUES. Sure to us it may be straight forward but not so for the viewer so that part i enjoyed with my 3 series with FWA as a presenter!
My take;
Rex was the first presenter to put fishing on the International TV market & introduce "light" sports fishing......he did a great job!
FWA, took TV Fishing & the Cinematogrophy via Mark Jones to the "next level" in WA & in Australia. It just so happens that Mark (FWA cameraman) was Malcom Douglas's original camera man for many years!
As for a stand-out presenter of mine, i pick Steve Starling who is a FULL bottle on fishing, fish species & techniques. His approach to fishing & viewers was admirable. I've learnt from him and that just so happened shaped my approach in being a Presenter for FWA!

Agreed
I don't feel comfortable using the penultimate term BEST as I think most presenters have their good and bad points. I respect Nick a lot as he can be funny without being painful. Jacko has his rare moments when he is least painful, but I agree, there are times when he has me cringing big time.
I respect Rex for what he did to fishing and getting young people involved (as did many others) but can't by any means rate him as one of the best because his personality grates me. JMO!
MD is always interesting to watch.
There'll be lots of disfferent opnions because people prefer different personalities and different things in a fishing show. Some want to be entertained and some want to be informed. With lot's of different wants and levels in that latter catagory.
But I always enjoyed watching (and still do from the DVDs I have) Steve C and Ryan. A good mix of entertainment (Steve) and knowledge (Ryan). I won't rate any one or more persons as best, but Ryan and Steve where (are) up there with my favourites.
No doubt others may (and have) rightfully disagree(d).
Soon to be de "dreamweaver" ed!

I think IFISH boys are
I think IFISH boys are pretty good to watch, they're not perfect but they don't annoy the crap outta me like most other presenters.
I think IFISH has the best shows too, usually a fair bit of variety and most episodes I've seen they usually get some good fish. They also visit exciting locations (I know of at least 3 episodes done at the Rowleys).
Shows like fishing Aus annoy the hell outta me when on a weekly basis you just see some pathetic location down south and all they get is a herring or two.

Matt Watson on The Fishing
Matt Watson on The Fishing Show is good value. He was the fella jumping out of the helicopter. He is absolutely brilliant on The Ultimate Lady DVD fishing the Wanganella Banks off the north Island of NZ. Funny fella and very knowledgable.
Mal Florence is another beauty. But locally Steve Correia and Ryan are right up there. Nicko's good and as stated the beer bimbo is a tool.

Starlo and Malcolm Douglas for me..
I have great respect for Starlo and I always enjoyed his shows. I spend a lot of time in the kitchen so I get quite excited watching Malcolm Douglas doing his work on the water and by the camp fire.
I agree Rex Hunt captured everyone's attention with his shows and I much enjoyed them myself. I do make some allowances for his personal behaviour. He is a Victorian after all LOL.
I also give Steve Corera a big wrap as well. He has done and continues to do great things to promote fishing. He did get on my nerves sometimes but he was right there and there was no faking his enthuisiasm.
Jacko shits me to tears. I agree with earlier comments that he should stick to beer commercials.
