Beginner soft plastic/hard lures rod & reel setup. suggestions please!!

 Hi everyone,

Been using bait all my life and now I would like to start using soft plastics/hard lures for primarily river fishing Swan/Canning area. Need to get a setup which is going to suit a beginner but also something I'm not gonna want to upgrade too soon here is what I have so far let me know what you think also line/softplastic/lure recommendations would be appreciated. Got my eye on the Atomic Hard Cranks 38 mid at the moment as I have heard good things. FIRST POST BTW!! Here are the links for the rod and reel I have seen let me know any suggestions.

Personally, I'd look at a 6'6" or 7" combo over 6' for bream if you're going to use it for plastics and hb's. Check out the Lemax range of rods available locally. Excellent bang for your buck. I got mine through Anglers Spot.

Anglers Spot!

Yeah got some Lemax/Ajiking gear from him as well...can't comment on the bream gear he's got, but very happy with the jigging stuff and absolutely over the moon with the way he (Mike) looks after his customers. I'm just sorry I don't live/work closer otherwise it would be my shop of choice all the time.

Sorry for the hijack, matt...good luck with your change over to artificials. The key is to develop confidence in your lures and to keep using them even if you think bait might be better on some occasions.

 Cheers everyone, Great

 Cheers everyone,

Great feedback yeah Bear I was not sure whether to go bigger tha 6' as I was just being mindful of when im in the scrub under trees sometimes throwing a line out, I do must rather use the large rods tho. Anglers spot where abouts it that? Is that High Rd, Riverton? How much would a Lemax 6'6/7' rod cost me roughly? also any recommendations on a reel to suit which wont hurt the wallet too much? If I could get a setup for around $100.00 I will be happy.

Thanks Auslobster for the encouragement!

Cheers,

Langerz

You're looking at around

You're looking at around $100-$150 for a rod, but look after it and it will last you a long time. The Blye Mountain range in the Lemax are a good starter, but I love the Black Rose range which are a little more. Bought a young friend of mine one of the smaller Ajiking reels to go with it and was pretty impressed with the quality for a cheap reel (around $50 I think it was). Great starter set that certainly doesn't have to be upgraded in a hurry. I've got 5 Lemax bream rods now and quite happily fish comps with them.

the reel doesn't look that amazing imo, my mate had something very similar to that and it's rubbish.

Rod on the other hand looks pretty decent, carbon fibre aswell..

$15 sounds pretty cheap,

$15 sounds pretty cheap, could be good to get you a start.

I bought one of those Pelagic rods in bright pink for the Mrs to try and get her more into fishing. I have loaded it up and for the price it doesnt feel 'too' bad, but you get what you pay for I guess.

To date it hasnt seen a fish, but that will change next week in Exxy, so ill let you know how it holds up!

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.
