The Bat Cave

Went to a spot we have named The Bat Cave today. 12ish m out Garden Isalnd way. Nice little cave pitch black with entry on 2 sides. Found these all huddled up in the corner.

Love it when they are all huddled up.

Always remember Uni days after a morning dive for a couple of crays at Rotto decided to lunch in Narrow Neck area. Just dropped the pick and lunched. Time to pull up the anchor and stuck!! On sandish bottom??

I dove overboard with fins and mask and checked out the situation. Pick perfectly down a hole in the sandy/reefy bottom. Tried to retrieve the anchor and then spotted feelers+++.

No decision needed. Dropped the pick back (it was in 8m water) and raced back to the boat. All 4 off us geared up, scuba down and hand picked our quota among maybe 100 or so poor sucker stuck in the hole with nowhere to go. Poor Uni students sure ate well for a day or two.

Went back the next day and it must have been one of those marches where they all walk behind each other, and somehow ended in this hole just when we  luckily dropped the pick in. Not a single one in the hole, and never again was everytime we checked it out when lunching a narrow neck.

Just luck sometimes but it sure was good.

Hopefully another family move

Mon, 2011-04-04 19:37

Hopefully another family move in. Had about 100 big buff bream follow us around too. Managed to drop the pick right at the front door of it today as well, would have been 10m away from where we descended down the anchor line.

Had a long run back though; got waved over from a boat nearby that had drained their battery trying to start their motor so tow rope out, hooked up and a slow haul back to the ramp. They were grateful though.
