If you want line capacity, go with an overhead outfit. Rod length is ideally 7-8ft as it helps with gaffing. 15-24kg rod is best recommend as sometimes you'll need to muscle the fish in to beat the sharks.

A large spinning reel can do the same job but you'll need to run braid and it can get quite expensive filling a spool up with 500m + of braid.

If you are going off the cliffs/rocks you will need some length in the rod to get your bait out over the edge. The rod I use is a 9 wrap butterworth fast taper fitted with two reel seats to allow either an overhead or deep spool Alvey holding something like 8-900 metres of 50lb mono.
When hooked up I find it easier to sit down and work the rod untill the fish is in close rather than standing up as it kills the shoulders and back if its a long way out.

LBG rod

g'day brg,

I've only been ballooning a couple of times.

Most key advice i can give is stay away from the Ugly Stick LBG rods. I Broke mine !st fish i ever hooked up/caught with it ( and it was the 1st day i'd used it) . and it was only a 6-7 kg mack tuna. Had a mate post a question about this rod on a LBG forum and exactly the same thing had happened to countless other guys.

I now have a Wilson LiveFibre M10 - Kicks arse on the Ugly Stick.

id either look at tld 30 2 speed or tyrnos 30, mako do some half descent 8ft 15-24 and they are good value overhead rods. Or spin outfit fin-nor 8500 or 9500 on a live fibre 9ft 15-24, both outfits are about the 500-600 mark
